General (whole group consensus on system) RPG over Maptools

I use maptools, generally because I used it years ago and I'm now old enough (just barely) that my brain favors the past over the present in terms of technology. There are better mediums, but I'm too stubborn and time crunched to learn them.

So I'm thinking about getting some heavy role-playing groups together for weekly (or possibly bi-weekly) game. It won't launch until next calendar year at the earliest, but I'm going to be largely converting my Player's wanted ads, to this forum.

Spoiler for a bit of the motivation: (Highlight or hover over the text to view)
I, after 15 years, realize I am not of the majority on how games are done on here. I deeply respect jase for his endeavors on here, and I appreciate all he's done for me by allowing me to share his labor of love, but with other players/GMs, I've had just one (*snort*) too many bad apples antagonize me, and rather than rehash a recurring pattern I think I will let my current games run their course and move on. No hard feelings, just a lesson of compatibility. For those games I play/GM I'm going to now become diehard devoted to. Unless I get special invites, I'm pretty much going to quit RPOL at the conlcusion of my current games. No fanfare, or community chat dismissal, but it is a matter of "when" not "if", and I'd like to keep in good standing on RPOL, mostly read and seldom post, but mostly just lurk and help other struggling GMs rather than play.

So other than the games I'm active in, which there are about half dozen of, including the ones I'm on hiatus with, I'll be trying to make some contacts to play some real-time (well sort of..."faster") games.

Here are the systems I know and love. I'll be glad to entertain new ideas, but if that's the case I'd rather be Co-GM or player. I want a group of peers though, where no one holds any heirs. Ideally I'd like to shift the GM scepter/hat around the group and give face-time to the others.

  • D&D 3.5
  • Pathfinder (I'm still a noob but I have to start somewhere)
  • D&D 4.0 (Yes, I'm not kidding, and you read that right, I like them all, about the same. As far as 4.0 is considered, I'm still a novice, but not a noob)
  • BESM 2e Revised (GG it's very specific for such a loosely arbitrary system...but it's what I know)
  • Exalted 1E (2e? maybe. 3e? Absolutely not)

Systems I know of but have almost no experience in. I'm very much willing to start a game to learn, since I prefer to GM, but I would need some help with these maybe would be Co-GM until I get shown the ropes.
  • The Window
  • Savage Worlds
  • Fate
  • Champions
  • Mutants & Masterminds
  • Uncertain on name (It's like Exalted, I forget the name but essentially you play the scion of god. There are few of these, I know, but there's certain one that has more western mythology feel, and not really the anime style)
  • 7th...something (again I forget the name. It's a rule-lite D&D model)

Systems I either have had too many bad experiences with or just have zero interest in.
  • WoD, new or old. (They're "tomato" and "tomato" and only sound different, to me.)
  • HERO (Champions is fine. But not HERO.)
  • CoC
  • Shadowrun edition=irrelevant (I have been force fed this and I have very bad experiences with very insensitive people. The system may be fine, but I have bad association with trying to play it, or even talk about it.)
  • Warhammer (see above)
  • Stargate
  • Archer
  • Spycraft
  • Hackmaster (These last few are mostly just disinterest, they're just "eh" for me
  • Startrek (Bad association)
  • Star Wars (Same GM, same players, same year, bad association)
  • Paranoia (This system is almost as off-limits as the last one...just because an actually, honest to evil; evil, cruel, and emotionally reprehensible GM)
  • Exalted 3e. They crossed a line, and made qualms about it. I will not even take free books of it if Onyx gives them to me themselves. I have negative interest in ever even opening a book of 3e. Some things are best left unread and away from touching a nerve.

I'm sure there are tons of very fun and adventurous games. Some might even be listed above. I want a game I can sink my teeth in, feel involved as a storyteller and make my players enjoy, equally if not more. I want combat to be risky, but mostly for the benefit of the players. I want my story to be fluid, to have events and villains, and innocents, and small time heroes; bend to the wills and effects of the PCS, the real stars. I really just want to have another creative medium with less restrictions and more communication. Not waiting days or weeks for a post that doesn't actually come, but just seeing if someone e-mails to say they're busy or doesn't show up for two weeks and so is put in stasis by default.

I want to write and have help learning what makes good stories. I want dice to play a part and so you know I'm not a Santa GM, but you are experiencing a mostly organic sense of danger, but ultimately is about the players, which there are more of, than myself, the GM.

That is my pitch, a bit rough and rusty, but ultimately the highlights. I want to have a discussion, and from there I will be willing to give a more narrow hook and campaign idea.

You can contact me at the E-mail v.xoverisix@gmail.com. Due to RL security, my name will appear as "Just V Alone" and it will have all generic information. This is the best E-mail to reach me at for gaming, since it's non-urgent/non-vital and so won't be rigorously filtered. It has been created for the express purpose of this post on RPOL.

I'm actually not sure if you can Rmail me, since the rules don't state this explicitly and that is a very gray area (to me, at least). If it's allowed by the mods/jase, I'm cool with it, certainly, and would welcome an Rmail. It may not be allowed, and so; mods, please remove this (or any) part, if it is incompatible with the rest of this post. I'm just trying to exercise some extrapolation based on what information I have.
