Re: OOC Thread for General Use (2)

I'm going to stick to just one (obligatory, proud papa) picture.  Here she is!

My mother-in-law is staying with us for about a month, to help my wife with the baby, and she's from Wood Green, in the north of London, and she wasn't familiar with the song that Esmerelda posted the link to, but I'm sure that we'll be getting no small number of English songs and stories from her, for babies.  For reference, my wife and I were both born here in the U.S.A., although she also has British citizenship.

Reshakazan: I got the languages straightened out yesterday or the day before, so Yip should be seeing posts in ysoki now.

*grin*  I was born in Hackney General Hospital -  just down the road from Woodgreen.  My family are originally from Tottennham, although none of us live there anymore.

Get mum-in-law to sing you  My Old Man's a Dustman.  If she won't  Youtube it  :)

Re: OOC Thread for General Use (2)

Oh, I mentioned the song and she immediately began to recite it.  Her eyes lit up more than a bit at references to places from her childhood.  While she's been in the U.S.A. since the very early 1970s, and has taken frequent trips back, some of the lyrics have begun to fade a bit it seems.

Speaking of dwarves, I keep telling my wife that our daughter should inherit my long beard.  She doesn't appear to be buying it, though, despite how quickly Dori calms when she can cuddle into it.

In reply to Artifex (msg # 636):

Some things live with you. I have never found a better entry-level political text than episodes of 'Yes Minister' and 'Yes Prime Minister', which was a sitcom of breathtaking cynicism and I still occasionally find myself remembering 'The Good Life' or wondering what some modern American audiences would make of 'The Kenny Everett Television Show', 'The Young Ones' or 'Allo Allo'.

I'm willing to bet that most of the childrens television she remembers has the quality of a fever dream though, we had some really, really weird stuff back then. ^_^

Re: OOC Thread for General Use (2)

We watch The Good Life and Allo Allo fairly regularly here.  They're favorites of my wife, and I've come to love them too.  There isn't much English children's television any of us watch, and my mother-in-law didn't have a television at home in the 40s through the early 70s, so I'm pretty sure she wouldn't remember any of it, weirdness aside.

Re: OOC Thread for General Use (2)

I'm underselling the feverish quality of some of the concepts - there was one show where a magical clockwork egg played classical music to the woodland critters while Sherlock Holmes watched. And of course, there's Watership Down and The Animals of Farthing Wood, where the bloody deaths of named cast members happens on screen several times in glorious childrens animation.

In more recent shows, you might find yourself enjoying the gentle humour of The Detectorists though - I caught it while I was back home over November.

My mother-in-law asked if you know the Tottenham Royal Ballroom.  She spent a lot of time there, in her youth, dancing.

Not me :) but The Royal was my parents stomping ground as teen-agers, which would have been sometime during the '40s.  Apparently George Melly used to bum cigarettes from my father, before he became famous. Ironically he managed to scrounge one fro me, in the '80s - when he was back on the smaller gigs circuit. LoL.

Re: OOC Thread for General Use (2)

Apologies to all those who participate in games that I run.  I just turned 49 (today), and had forgotten exactly how exhausting having a newborn at home is, especially when coupled with a full-time job.  I'm working on catching up, but posts from me may be a bit more sporadic than my initial optimism might have indicated.
