Heading below, Tommy cannot see the zigzag paint  without some light.  The air is not great and there is a smell of something long dead, and a slapping and creaking sound, like bare feet on a treadmill.

Virgilio's staff still has the Continual Light (at candle strength) from the trip down the long stairway.

"I can make more lights, and brighter ones, if they're wanted."

Grohm wrinkled his nose and coughed a couple of times.

Dne slowly nods, his head heavy with avian wisdom.  "I can indeed.  Would you like me to create air, or purify it?  Your flimsiest wish is my most ardent command."

"Creating more only sends dead air somewhere else, right. Purifying it make the problem go away, for now. Do I understand correctly?"

There is a lot of space down there.   I don't know if magic will be enough to get us through.", Grohm said.

"Well, someone could hold their breath and look to see if there's an upward path somewhat nearby.  I'll volunteer, unless someone has some skill in holding their breath and might be able to hurry less.

"If I do go, I"ll need to make a brighter light, but I can cancel it as soon as I'm done."
