At a back table in the guildhall

The main hall of the adventurer's guild is a two story balconied affair with long trencher tables and benches. There is a large fireplace that has doors to the kitchens, where most of the mercenaries, mountbanks and murder hobos that make up the membership go to get their daily bowl of hot brown, and near them are stairs heading up to shops, offices and private quarters. Somewhere out of the main hall are stairs leading down to the arena, proving grounds and undercroft.

At a back table in the guildhall

The group at one of the tables in the back is an odd mix of two halflings, a leprechaun, a dwarf, and an elf. The elf sits just a bit apart from the others, as is typical of those raised in the mountains. Dressed in ordinary clothes and decked out in combat leathers, his wide hat is oddly of much finer material. Twin scabbards hold long knives on his sides, and his pack rests between his feet. When he looks up from his meal of hot brown, it is easier to see wisps of his blue hair peeking out from beneath the hat. Stranger than that, his eyes appear a luminous blue as well marking him as Air-Infused.

He finishes the bowl and leans back. With a faint trace of a southern accent marking him as not from Northport, Espiri says to the group, “I’m getting tired of waiting on Summanus. Too many meals of this ‘hot brown’ are making me actually want to eat my trail rations instead, and I’m almost out of money. Not all of us are as rich as the dwarf.” He nods his head in the general direction of Valdnur.

In a rare moment, Espiri actually moves his head a bit closer to the group and says, “Let me get to the point. I think we should find a job that pays well. If Summanus gets back before we leave, so much the better. Otherwise, he will just have to wait until we get back. I think we proved ourselves quite capable together guarding the caravan.”

At a back table in the guildhall

Osgood was sitting with his back against the wall. The slightly build, brown haired halfling was idly playing with a large knife in one hand while the other was under the table unsuccessfully attempting to undo the knot on Rick's purse. His bowl was long empty as was a couple of pint glasses in front of him. "Right you are. I'm down to my last few coppers, and soon I won't be able to afford even this swill." The knife disappeared and he attempted to get the last few drops out of a glass. "If that no good Summanus can't be bothered to show, I see no reason to wait anymore."

At a back table in the guildhall

The dwarf is wearing light plate armor set with simple green stones. A pair of throwing axes are strapped to his back and he has a pair of repeating pistol crossbows sitting on the table in front of him that normally holster on his hips. He finishes the brown porridge with gusto looking up confused at the others remarks, "I dunno what you mean about eating your rations lad, this stuff is free and that makes it good!"

He licks the rim of the simple wooden bowl to make sure he got it all, then pulls a small mirror out of his pack so he can see to brush and loose bits out of his immaculate beard. Satisfied that his appearance is restored he chimes in, "A job would do us all good though. Sitting idle is no good for the halflings, less so the quarterling... We should follow up on some of those rumors in town. Summanus should be here soon I'm sure and extra road weary to boot; I'm sure he won't mind waiting on us to finish whatever job we start. What sort of job are you thinking?"

In reply to Valdnur Silverheart (msg # 4):

A familiar figure approaches, the assistant caravan leader. His gambeson and gear is clean as is he, but he looks far from relaxed.
"Gentlemen, we have some bad news. The leader of our mercantile company, Batholemieu Fortescu, has not not made his way to Northport, and I fear ill has befallen him. He was travelling with your friend Patensus, and a few swordsmen. I will give it another week, and then I must form another company."

“If yer not gonna finish that....” murmured the other Halfling, hopping up on his chair to reach for Espiri’s bowl. “Hey!” he snapped at Oz, swatting his hand away. “I ain’t got much left in there anyways...”

He sat back down as the merchant approached.

“You heard from Summanus?” he said. “Haven’t seen him anywhere in Northport either.”

"That's not good lads..." Valdnur says, stating the obvious, "Do we know what route they were traveling? Perhaps there is some way we can track them and figure out where they are? Summanus might've taken a detour here or there, but not while traveling with Mister Fortescu..."

Re: At a back table in the guildhall

Espiri slaps at Rick's hand and mutters, "Are you too short to see over the edge of a bowl? It's empty."

The news about Summanus gives the elf a glower. His voice laden with sarcasm he says back to Valdnur, "Thank you for stating the obvious. Even if we were to know where Summanus disappeared, who is going to fund a rescue? I think you are the only one of us, Valdnur, that is not strapped for cash. Now if there was a substantial reward to go investigate I think we might be able to make that work."

His last sentence turns into a question as Espiri glances at Eustache and raises a quizzical eyebrow.

"Oi!" Rick frowned at the Elf. "Ehh, yes. I am too short to see over the edge of the bowl. Obviously. Is your head also half air?"

The Halfling did his best to scowl menacingly, but it lasted about a second before he burst into laughter and slapped Espiri in the arm.

"Get it? Half air? Like you! Bahahahaha!"

He chugged the rest of his mead and reached quite unsubtly for Oz's cup.

That should save you an awful lot of guessing." Osgood chuckled at his cousin. "Now Eustache, I'm with the tall one over there, that being flat broke. I don't even have enough funds to keep in food and drink, let alone give my clumsy, lead fingered cousin something to steal that won't get him killed when he gets caught. As much as we all like Summanus, I simply can not put together supplies for a rescue trip without some backing."

Snatching the Leprechaun’s drink, he said, “I’ll call us even if you left a few sips of . . . damn, you drink fast for such a little guy.”

He returned to his typical, cheery disposition despite the subject of their missing compatriot. “As for Summanus, without some coin we’re gonna have a hard time tracking him down. I say get ourselves some local work in the mean time.”

Not too far out of the guild is the Redlght district, which has a high orcish population, in addition to a collection of seedy taverns. Just off the mostly goblin artisinal district is a narrow lane with a pawnshop and a glassblower shop. Beside that is a boarding house with an exterior entrance to an apothecary shop, heralded by a wooden sign with a painting of a mortar and pestle.  The door at the base of the stairs is open.  A bearded man in patch robes is sweeping out some glass shards.

Osgood hears about a raid that happened about three weeks ago, where a beer distributor with an old imperial arena in the basement was raided. The proprieter of the fight club, an ogrekin named Vilgar, fled underground with a small keg that was described as being unusually heavy.

Petty demons mostly melt away when killed; greater demons have valuable blood, hearts, horns and teeth. If salted quickly, petty demons can be flayed for superior scroll and spellbook material, this must be done within an hour of death; a typical petty demon hide can be made into 2d pages of fine vellum that has a bonus for demonological texts and scrolls.

You head out of the guild, and towards that odd triangle between the spires of the Cathedral of the Tripartite god, the Dismal Tower of the Sages' Guild, and the daunting Adamantine abode of Shadow Elves, Twilight house. Edging on the intersection of the Dockside, Redlight, and Artisanal districts, the area is a little seedy. Just the same, smoke can be seen puffing out of the chimneys of several buildings.

You hear a little chatter, the origin of the blue paut seems to be from someone calling themselves Nicholas Flamel...

You find a loose nail and tie off the line.  With the door open, you can see that the line would have fired a crossbow both at human head height at the doorway - only Espiri would have been at risk. The line continues from there, looking as if it might have set off an alarm as well as the crossbow.

Beyond the door is a smallish room, with wide plank flooring and rough plaster walls. There is a fireplace, and despite the smoke you saw from above, there is no fire in the fireplace.

Occ the skill Search, which is per-5 lets you find all of the hidey holes in an area.

You can determine that the recent brickwork is concealing the back of the hearth, and the work carries partway up the flue, which you can see to be full of smoke-someone is routing smoke up this chimney without it spilling out into the room, possibly  from underneath.

Meanwhile, the trap door on the other side has an iron ring to pull it up with.

Re: At a back table in the guildhall

"Oh come off it lad, surely these are the muscle. No black market paut dealer is gonna open his own door."  Valdnur says, then he pauses looking at the corpses, "...I mean he wouldn't would he?"

Is there another door to go through?

Re: At a back table in the guildhall

Rick scowled at Vald as he lowered his crossbow for a moment. He then raised it again and moved around the room scanning for any other guards. He then took a few moments to dig through the room for anything useful, perhaps something he can use to brew later.

After beheading the first of the three guards Khoza calmly walks over to the other two downed guards and beheads them aswell, looking almost sad that there was not much more of a fight to be had.

Arthur follows Khoza into the room and searches it for any hidden compartments or doorways that might be hiding some loot.

In reply to Arthur (msg # 170):

The area is two yards wide by 20 yards long, there are 3 other doors in the same wall as the door you entered through, and two doors in the opposite wall at either end. Each of the doors on the same side as yours is barred and equipped with a bell.
Toward one end there is a barrel with a few stools around it, and on the barrelhead are a set of playing cards and a handfull of copper coins.

Inside the barrel (excellent search) is a removable panel, with a first aid kit and three vials... and a dark square bottle and three stacked leather cups.

The men have cheap shortswords, light scale armor, a couple of knives , three ordinary ST 12 crossbows and 34 bolts between 3 cheap quivers. The men have pouches with personal basics, one cleaning kit for a crossbow, and apparently all of their coin is on the barrelhead- $23

Espiri asks, "What do you all suppose is on the other side of the barred doors? More entrances like the one we came through?"

The elf walks up to one of the barred doorways and knocks on it with the hilt of his dagger. He notes the others finding random loot and goes to help divvy it up, but waits to hear if anything knocks back on the other side of the door.

"Grab the coins. We can backtrack to strip the bodies after we find and deal with whoever is in charge." Valdnur says, "No sense in loading ourselves down when there may still be some fighting to do."

He takes a moment to reload a bolt into the chamber of each pistol crossbow, then stands ready with Espiri to take care of the next room.

In reply to Valdnur Silverheart (msg # 173):

Nothing knocks back from the other side of the barred door. You do note that there are metal pipes running accross the ceiling, from the wall with the two doors, obver to the wall with the four doors, just like the one you saw heading up to the false wall in the fireplace above.

Each of the barred doors has a bell next to it, with a wire heading up from the bell to run along the pipe out of site. Each doot has a wire attached to its corner that leads up to the ceiling and accross to the far wall, as if the bells by the door led upstairs and the doors individually rang bells elsewhere.

Espiri glances at the pipes and strings and comments, "Well, this looks like a fun way to send a message throughout a lair. Shall we go greet whoever is on the receiving end? Who wants to pick a door?"

Arthur considers the pipes and if it would be possible to break/damage them with infernal flame/infernal flamejet.

Infernal flame might be enough to do it, although a crowbar would probably work too.
