Underground

There is one exit from the room, more or less on the opposite wall. The mine cart tracks disappear down it.

Checking the mine cart, you find that it is empty, on the rails, and is prevented from moving by a rock wedged under a wheel. There is a gentle downward slope from where you descended to the exit.

"If we proceed, we need to .make sure we can get back safely, o we use ropes on the carts, or do we walk?"

He feels it would be good if the cart was able to be slowed, should the slope increase in angle, but it may be more prudent to walk.

Re: Return to the Western Heartlands

"I once heard of story in our pub about dwarves riding a cart in a mine and things turning bad...  I think I am for walking." says Torvek.  "But yes, we made it that far, we should keep going."

Torvek gets ready to continue down the mine tunnel.  Just as he approaches, he asks "Do you think poison gas could have come up from the tunnel and caused the death of the miners?  We should be careful."

Torvek moves to where the tunnel meets the room and turns back, looking in some random direction where the invisible thief might or might not be located

"We should keep going then.  Corym, I assume you lead the way with Krackor and I following behind."

Torvek waits for Corym to confirm and go first before starting to walk down the tunnel immediately behind Krackor.

Ulfric helps those who need it setting up camp.  Looking to set up his own after the others are done.  He gets his things arranged and settles in for the night.  Keeping sword close and gear near by.

I will take a turn at the watch if you all need me to.  I am not much good in the dark but can stand guard.

Surface Camp

Ulfric takes the first watch, standing sentry as the last of the light leaves and darkness descends over the Trielta Hills. The exhausted ex-prisoners are quickly asleep, and the air is silent aside from the occasional snore.

After several bells, Ulfric wakes Kitheras to take the next watch. They're in the process of handing over when distant movement catches Kitheras's eye. Both of them turn, looking to the east, and after a moment they're able to localize three large, dark shapes flying some ways off. They don't seem to be coming directly towards the group, but in the darkness it's hard to tell.

((ooc: Ulfric and Kitheras, please roll Int checks to help ranging and identification. There is a penalty, due to the darkness, so roll low.))

The Mine

The exit tunnel is sized for a dwarf or gnome. It's comfortable enough for Krackor, but both Corym and Torvek need to walk crouched over. It heads northeast and is in general as straight as an arrow, descending slightly with a gentle angle. This is a hard rock mining tunnel, however, so there are two places where the tunnel shifts to one side or another to better follow the vein of ore. Whatever it might have been; the miners were extremely thorough and have left nothing behind.

The rails from the first room continue on down the center of the tunnel. The iron torches and sconces continue as well, though the enchantments are failing even worse in this stretch and only two are still lit.

After about four hundred feet, the tunnel abruptly opens into a rectangular room about eighty feet wide. The rails continue across the room and disappear into another tunnel almost directly across from you. The room contains the crumbling wreckage of wood benches and tables, along with two massive bellows flanking the opposite exit. They are instantly recognizable to Krackor: these are ventilation bellows, and were used to supplement air supply in mines.  They are completely inoperable, though fortunately there seems to be enough air down here to support you. At least for now.

((ooc: No map, since this is a very boring room.))

Keeping the others appraised of their descent and what couldhave been mined, which he found joy in explaining, they at last entered the larger room. "Ah, at last" his face beaming in what little light was around. "The ventilation room, I wonder where the pipes lead to outside, probably inside a tree or a cliff face. Sometimes they just move the air rather than getting in New air, some spells ca bring free air in, like a dust devil, at least one of those isn't trapped inside or there wouldn't be a bellows" pleased with himself, he continues. "take in some better air before we move on, I'm checking the place out. Atleast next time, we can take the cart" He grins, then starts to search the whole area for loose walls and floors.

Torvek look at the blocked ventilation shafts curiously. "My dear Krackor, should I assume that unfortunately, these are not where dwarves hide their most valuable spellbooks, is it?" he says with a slight smile before continuing.  "So you think we are safe enough for air for now.  I don't have convenient air moving spells memorised. I have access to a dimension door which could help us move back more quickly if need or I could summon something.  Maybe I could also change myself into something that does not need air."  he suggest.  "As before, since we are here, we should keep going." he finishes getting ready to continue down the tunnel.

Re: Return to the Western Heartlands

Trielta Hills

As Ulfric tries to fade into the background, Kitheras takes a closer look at the shadows. They're big but not enormous, and far enough away that he can't figure out exactly what they are. Larger than a griffon, but not a new Flight of Dragons. The one thing he's able to figure out is their flight path: thought they've got a different starting location, unless they turn aside they'll pretty much overfly the same complex your group just came from.

A few moments later and even Kitheras's keen eyes lose sight of the shadows against the night sky.

((ooc: The fliers are not coming near your camp. Anyone want to do anything else before moving on to morning?))

Underground

Krackor and Corym spend the time to diligently go over the room. There are a number of small ventilation shafts in the ceiling that were mostly hidden until you looked for them. None of them look like they were carved, but instead were probably shaped with some manner of magic. There's still airflow through some of them, though there's no light or sound to hint at where they might lead. Otherwise, the room is unremarkable, and none of the tools or furniture are in any survivable shape.

((ooc: Whoever is leading on the way out, please roll some Find Traps rolls. Krackor is obviously not stealthy, but are either Corym or Torvek trying to move silently (and how far ahead of Krackor would you be staying to make that work?))

I would be attempting stealth.  I'm trying to stay ahead of Krackor/Torvek a round or two of movement's worth. Since I'm invisible and searching for traps, obviously they'll periodically catch up. I rolled 10 find/remove traps rolls

05:10, Today: Corym Ildroun rolled 41 using 1d100.  Move Silently. – 41

Above Ground

The rest of the night passes without incident. As the sun begins to brighten the sky, the group awakens. Everyone is very obviously anxious to get back to Triel. After a quick morningfeast of whatever food is available, you set out.

Dew sparkles in the rising sun, soaking your pants as you walk. The chill air warms slowly, and you keep an anxious eye out on your surroundings. It would be a cruel irony to survive the giants only to be killed now. Fortunately, the Trielta Hills live up to their pacific reputation, and by the time the sun is reaching its height, you arrive at the town without seeing anything more intimidating than some ground squirrels.

Your arrival does not go unnoticed. A shout is raised from the wall, and an armed group forges out to meet you. As they get closer, one of them shouts. "Lord Elvar! You've returned!" Triel's ruler, who had been quiet and withdrawn during the entire journey, perks up noticeably.

((ooc: Congratulations, you've reached Triel!))

Below Ground

Corym leads the way down the tunnel. It's mostly straight, but slopes downward more than the previous one, and has several more jogs left or right. After several hundred feet, Corym sees another room in the distance and carefully creeps his way forward.

The rails continue into another circular room. All of the torches have died, leaving it in complete darkness, but infravision lets Corym see far enough to realize that there is a large crack in the floor that bisects the room. The crevice runs northwest to southeast, and the rails disappear into it and do not appear to be on the other side. There isn't anything obviously hostile within sight; this side of the crevice is mostly bare.

((ooc: Please remind me: are either Krackor or Torvek invisible?))

The stupefied state of the villagers and their mayor had irritated Kitheras since he first found them. Now that the Mayor had perked up, he wondered if there would finally be some useful information available.

"Lord Elvar, can I see you to your manor? Perhaps we can discuss the nature of your capture and captivity."

Kitheras gestures subtly to Ulfric and Yngvar to follow.
