After his latest set was over Dorian joined the group forming up at a table.

"Well at least the news is good from a political standpoint.  I would hate to have to set aside our concerns to rescue Cormyr from its troubles." the Elf deadpanned.

"Before we leave I plan on sending a message home to Evereska.  Does anyone have a correspondence they'd like passed along?" Dorian asked the assembly.

Foam on his mustache and beard waggled along with his head as Katarn nodded. "Aye... if there are those in Evereska who kin pass word fer me back ta th' Hospice 'o Deadsnow. 'Tis an outpost in th' Nether Mountains. North 'o th' High Forest. Tell 'em, They've not lost me yet, th' Finder's just takin' me on a long journey. Much appreciated if ye could pass that on fer me Dorian. Also, ye're a talented entertainer. If we come outta this with some wealth fer leisure, ye should think about doin' that 'n lettin' some others face dangers fer a bit."

Dorian laughed "I thank you, friend Katarn, but I'm afraid I wander about entertaining folks so that I can find and face dangers."

The Elf took a swig of ale and grimaced "More's the pity because I've acquired a taste for small beer and Human ales.  I think it has ruined my taste buds and I'm unsure if I could tell the difference between Saerloonian Glowfire or Evermead now..."

Krackor was also entertained by Dorian's humour, and nearly spat his Ale out with his last remarks...'Almost'. Don't make me laugh so much when I'd drinking Dorian, a Dwarf's not to spill his ale unless he means to.  Now I believe you are a mug behind and pours Dorian a big mug full of Ale.

"One for me!" Corym called, but continued to chat with the inn keeper about river boat captains.

"Barges, eh?" The innkeeper shrugs. "Late in the season for it. The Ashaba doesn't freeze, but that doesn't make it any less pleasant when the Thar winds blow. There aren't any in town right now." He pours a couple of drinks and sends them off with a serving lad before turning back to you. "There might be one more barge coming down from Shadowdale. Late harvest and all that. Keep an eye on the river. If one doesn't come in the next three, four days, then there won't be any until spring."

"So the bargemen all live south of here?  In Highmoon, presumably?  And if there's none going down until the Spring, presumably they wouldn't be coming up until late Winter?"

Corym will wait for the responses and then return to his party.

"We have some matters to consider--if the innkeeper is well informed, then there are currently no barges in Ashabenford--they've all departed already.  There is one due down from Shadowdale in the next three or four days.  If it doesn't come by then, it won't."

As I see it, this leads to many complications.

1.  If we secure a barge to Highmoon, there's unlikely to be a barge back until the late Winter, unless we pay dearly for the privilege.  Is that a delay we're willing to endure?
2. If we can't secure a barge to Highmoon, do we take the long road, follow the river, or scrap the entire idea and return to our project?
3. If we scrap the idea and return to our project, what do we do with Talathel?  He's still not capable of taking care of himself really."

I wasn't thinking of anything specific.  Finding a merchant or another Bard that was traveling in that direction?

If this isn't the kind of place to find that, I'll wait for another opportunity.

"We don't really have bargemen," the innkeeper says. "Not like the sea has sailors. Just some lads and lasses who make a bit of extra coin taking things up or down the river. All three dales have them. Ours are done for the season, but you know those crazy Grimmar. Never put it past them to make the trip, even in winter. If they had something to sell, of course."

"I need to send my family a letter and let them know what's happened," Kora says. "I don't want my father thinking he needs to climb back up on his horse and come looking for me. Mistledale is famous for its horses; I'm sure we could hire a rider to take letters to Suzail, where my family has a factor."

She frowns. "With the Zhents in charge of the northern pass, they'd need to go the long way. South to Iraeibor then up the vale. It might take all winter, but they'd make it to Hill's Edge. And my family could forward your letters to Evereska. Or rather that inn which is as close as you all let the rest of us get."

In reply to Kora Roustinghorn (msg # 410):

If there isn't a barge and Mistledale has horses, assuming our mages can create enough horses, we'd only need to get a few more or a cart or wagon. A wagon would allow us to do as you mentioned previously Corym, take goods down.

Having to wait the winter out, In my opinion, wouldn't be that bad, longer days, less cold, better prepared if you ask me.

Krackor looked around at the group sitting at the table or close by, wondered at Talathel's condition and the situation they find themselves in.

We could always settle here or back in Glen, create a good base and establish ourselves as a reputable group, find a bit of work. If barges are not heading South any delays may help our friend here.

I’m not sure I fully take your meaning—do you mean to say that the barge pilots ARE here and they’re merely not planning on making another run this season?

Smiling, Sirenya shook her head at Krackor's challenge. She could hold her own drinking, most of the time, but she was not fool enough to take a dwarf on. "Never a good idea to try and outdrink a dwarf," she informed him. "Leastways, not at my size!

"Besides, I like to sleep in after a good bout of drinking. If we're to be on the road again in the morning, I don't want to be doing it with a headache, and the rest of you won't want to be waiting, because I certainly couldn't keep the pace you've been setting so far!"

Still, she managed to put the drink away fairly steadily, if at a slower pace.

"Don't rightly know," he says. Raising his voice he shouts across the tavern. "Heln! Has Oristel returned yet?"

A thin, tanned man dressed in riding leathers looks up from his card game by the door. "Aye. She and the lads got back two days ago."

"In the barge, or did they sell it for lumber?"

"With it. It's beached on the left bank."

The innkeeper nods to you. "There you go. Oristel's the best of our river rats. If anyone's interested in taking a trip south into the fangs of winter, it'll be her." He gives you directions to her house.

Many Thanks!

To the Party

"It seems that there is one barge mistress in town whose barge is still intact and may be willing to make the trip.  I'll see if I can speak with her and make the arrangements.  The barge from Shadowdale may be cheaper if they're heading that way on other business already, but Oristel will have a reason to come back this way once our business is concluded--we won't have to winter in High Moon."

"Kora, would you mind coming with me to help make the negotiations?  You've a much better mind and tongue for such things than I."

Lisyening to Kora and the elves, Krackor remembers something mid gulp.

I have an idea that may help with the letters. Surely in a place like this, there would be powerful mages fighting the Zhents or as part of powerful groups i  the past having retired from Adventuring, maybe they can help send messages!

He was pleased with his though, raised his mug as he looked around and gave a toast in a room filling voice "To messages and those who can help send them. "

That's a toast Sirenya will drink to, although she has no intention of sending any messages. Wouldn't want the wrong people to get wind of where she is, after all. It's so much more pleasant, that way.

However, "Might be a good time to do a bit of shopping, before we get on a barge or set out with a cart. I'm not really carrying any real winter wear."
