Ars Magica de Profundis

I had this idea a while ago and it still is marinading in the back hearths of my mind.

I would like to see if it were possible to play as a covenant of magi writing letters in the first person. Something like Ars Magica meets De Profundis. All activity of characters would happen through first person letters between various characters. I have played De Profundis but, while I own Ars Magica, I have never played it. I like the idea of a Covenant, its creation, maintenance and livelihood but really am put-off by the depth of the rules.

Is this something that anyone in their right mind would play? I just had to throw it out there.

I would be interested in this. An epistolary RPG! Also, I have never played Ars Magica, but would like to learn enough about it to possibly add its flexible/improvised magic system to games that I DM.

I own neither system, but an epistolary rpg sounds neat!

Ars Magica de Profundis

I wrote that I know very little of Ars Magica, but I do know that an older edition-- 1996's Fourth Edition-- is made available for free by the publisher Atlas Games as a means of promoting the system.

Ars Magica de Profundis

I bought the massively inclusive bundle over at the Bundle of Holding so I have all the background stuff.

We can even make the learning process, that the rulebooks are actual magical tomes teaching our characters how to make a covenant. Basically the only thing I know is that the covenant have a season and that spells go into weird critical failures.

But I will use what ever edition is necessary. Do we have any other magi curious about this?

I don't really care for the Ars Magica ruleset, but de Profundis is a great game. Using the lore from AM and otherwise ignoring all the mechanics and just writing de Profundis epistolary  would be something I might be interested in.

I failed to mention to wingnut, that De Profundis barely has any rules, more like categories. What is no doubt important is the Charter, which is simply deciding what we will write about and its parameters. This is also true of Ars Magica.

Aye have we enough to at least form a game-"Ars Magica de Profundis"?
