Overwatch

Would anyone be interested in a game set in the futuristic world of Blizzard’s Overwatch video game? I don’t mean playing the actual heroes from the game, but rather new characters who “don’t see the world the way it is, but how it could be.” Optimism and bright colors required.

I'm interested. I was in an overwatch game a long time ago, but the GM ended up flaking so it didn't last long. I'd like to bring back my character from it though.

Any particular systems in mind? I could see a Cortex Plus hack working nicely, emulating characters would be pretty straightforward. Ultimates could be a little tricky to model, but probably doable.

I hadn’t given much thought at a system, but FATE Core is flexible enough to handle anything. I’ve also been looking at Genesys lately, but have never played it yet (except for the Star Wars variants). I’m open to suggestions. My primary goal is to explore the lore of the game.

Sounds interesting to me as well. Something like Mutants and Masterminds might also work although it is significantly more crunchy than FATE or Cortex.

There's a lot of adventure potential in the Overwatch setting that'd be fun to play and explore.  I doubt there would be a shortage of players willing to jump on board depending on the system you settle on.

I think Aberrant from WhiteWolf would be a good, if obscure, system match.

Seconding Mutants and Masterminds as a good choice for this game.

Definitely a thing I have my eye on, depending on system. Hi Brosuke ^^

So 2 votes for M&M. Would that system work for everyone?

The problem with MnM is that it's rather crunchy, as was mentioned. Personally I think that Fate core is a better system for a couple of reasons.

1. It's much better for telling a story.
2. Overwatch has a really ripe setting for interesting characters. Fate lends itself very well to fleshing out characters and making things open and interesting.

The only hangup I have with Fate is Aspects. For PbP, discussion about Aspects and emulating particular effects can take far too long. Cortex Plus (among others) offers more straightforward mechanics for its meta-currency and allowing players the space to model the effects they want with its various dice pool modifications.

Having run both systems, I much prefer Cortex Plus, both to allow players to make up characters that "feel" unique to play, and for GMs to hack for whatever setting they need.

It depends really. If you just want the narrative experience of playing in the Overwatch world, Fate or Cortex should work fine. If you want the combat and missions to have more bite, MnM would do well.

Personally, I’m more interested in telling stories set in the Overwatch universe. For battles, I’d rather play the video game. Having said that, I’m going to select FATE, for the simple reason that I have zero experience running a Cortex-based game. If more people vote Cortex over FATE, I’ll have to recruit a co-GM to handle the mechanics side of things.

In reply to EliteTraveller (msg # 13):

If you want to pick up Cortex Plus, Exalted: Blood and Fire is probably the best (free, online) resource, at least until Cortex Prime starts shipping.

I'd happily help co-GM mechanics, though I think everyone's gonna be fine without my training wheels after a little while, haha.
