Dragon Ball Z Instant Fuzion Game

So the nostalgia bug has hit me, and it won't go away. I have the urge to run a game using the old R. Talsorian Games Dragon Ball Z: Anime Adventure Game. It isn't a very good system, and I'm super aware of that. I also won't be applying most of my usual house rules to it, because I'd like to play the game presented rather than rebuilding the whole thing from scratch as I often end up doing. Anyone going into it should probably be aware that the game system was not well constructed, and should be okay with that.

That said, who's down for yelling a lot and punching space monkeys in the face from a thousand feet away (just far enough for quiet conversation, y'know?) with LIFE BULLETS? :D

Also, wondering just how to go about this. I've got a serious plot for a serious run of DBZ, but I don't think I can make that work on RPoL. As it stands, this is going to be more slapdash. Not sure quite what players would want to see in terms of a setting for something like this. Actual DBZ Earth, with all the characters and plot elements in place? A version without the heroes, but with the same story beats? Same style planet but with totally original characters inhabiting it?

I often play in a version of DBZ Earth set well after the events of the series, swapping out all canon characters for replacements with little to no explanation. I could be persuaded to leave in canon characters, or even allow players to take on the canon heroes (remade using character creation rules, of course), if that's a thing people want to do.

What would be fun and interesting?

Me! I actually own both books and have almost tracked down that elusive third one. It ain't cheap.

With how rare DBZ games are, I'll take anything you feel like giving.

Those'll come in pretty handy! There's also a pdf for the Cell Saga's unpublished rough draft running around with the serial numbers filed off so it could be released to the public. I'm mostly just using the first book, but I have all of them just in case. And fifteen years of house rules to call on if need be.

Really I'm looking more for what sorts of things players would like. I could easily enough just do my own thing, but it's moot if nobody's into it. The only thing I've got settled in my mind right now is that I want to use the established Dragon Ball Earth, but everything else, including who's on it, is up in the air.

This intrigues me but I lack any knowledge of the game. Know of any site that I can use to read up on the system mechanics?

Well, you could look up the DBZX pdf from Christan Conkle. He did writing on the sourcebooks and put together hugs own house rules for the game in a free pdf. They're pretty similar to what I'll be using. But the game is simple enough: Skill+Stat+3d6 vs a target number. Four stats, six skills, four derived stats.

Any thoughts on what you'd like to see in such a game? Or what you would like to avoid?

Well, I am currently reading over a pdf of this system, and it may take a few attempts to get everything down to a point that I don't need my hand held.

That being said, I am still interested in this game, and  I like the idea of the same story beats without the heroes just because I have always thought about how well a character I created would do in Goku's place.

I have no experience with the system, but am a major DBZ fan. I would love to play in something like this.

Sounds like I should stick with the basics of the world, but swap out Our Heroes for the PCs with similar story beats in place. It'd be hard to have the same ones precisely, especially as the setting's all about getting to know characters over generations, and we'll have to just be meeting these heroes now, and then there's the problem of all of Goku's friends having been enemies at some point (even Bulma opened their relationship by shooting him in the face). We can work out those bits later.

The real heart of the question I need player input on: Should I swap out Master Roshi, Korin, Yaijirobe, the Briefs family, Mr. Popo, Kami, and Dende for non-canon replacements, or keep them as they are?

I've set up a game space. Anyone here who's interested can find a link to this game over in the Wanted - Players forum.
