[IC] Midnight Campaign Setting / Middle-Earth D&D 5e System

I'd like to run a game with the Midnight campaign setting, but using D&D 5e rules, and probably the new Middle-Earth adaptation of 5e rules. I'm looking for any work done on converting Midnight to 5th edition rules, I believe there's a pdf floating around out there. Characters would need to be individually customized, obviously, on an individual basis. I'd only convert material and rules as they were needed or came up in the game.

I've never run Midnight before, so any of you die-hard fans will automatically know more about it than me, but I love the setting from what I've read of it so far. I'd try to make it have a little more of the Middle-Earth feel, though still very oppressive and heavy. I'm not knowledgeable enough about Tolkien to feel like I could do a conversion from Midnight to Middle-Earth (using ME names/places/etc.) and do it justice. This would be less about crunch and more about narrative and role-play.

Any interest in this?

I'd be all for this! Midnight and Middle-Earth are two flavours that go great together. I'm one of those aforementioned die-hard fans, so I'd be happy to help with any conversionwork that needs doing.

I looked up AiME--I hadn't realized it was a Cubicle7 game. The reviews look very promising for a Midnight game, and I've long wanted to play in the setting.

Count me potentially interested.

I have played in a couple of Midnight campaigns.  I'd be up for playing in this setting!

Thanks for the interest. I'm working through some of the conversion stuff right now and have found a few others interested at least enough to maybe get a game started. Hopefully in the next week or so I'll have progressed to that point.

It appears that the Midnight SRD (Against the Shadow) is down. I see there's access via the internet archive, so at least it's still available to some degree.

The core book is also easy to find for cheap online.

I'm really late to the game, it seems that interest in the setting peaked several years ago. I can't believe I didn't hear about it until after the hype was long gone. I'd like to see FFG update the setting now that D&D5e has gotten settled and is very popular.

I've got a lot of ideas, getting a game set up now that there are a few people interested. I'm not sure how many people check this particular forum, but I'm guessing that when I post the game link it will generate a bit of interest.

One of my biggest considerations is what level do we start at? I'm leaning toward starting out at 5th level, not too powerful, but not a weakling neither.

As long as we start at at least 3rd, I'm flexible. I really dislike playing before every class has started an archetype.

Midnight is a brutal, brutal setting.  Starting at 5th edition leaves us a at a position where we have lived long enough to have gained skills to avoid most of the general Shadow Agents type of thing for everyday activity.  This could be for any number of reasons...

Residing in the Elven lands, not yet fully under shadow control; good skill at avoiding notice/deception/etc; the ability to kill the low level folks without notice, and getting out of town before a legate shows up; or living on our own, and avoiding shadow/orc patrols.

I really enjoyed my previous experience with midnight, although each campaign I was in was a solo one, and I had few ties to anything but the plot lines I followed, which allowed me to move around without causing too much trouble.

I think I may adopt something from my FtF game. We only play IRL once a month, so each time the characters level-up, we double level, ie 5th to 7th. That way, there is a seriously tangible progression each time. It also allows the adventure to scale up more rapidly. In PbP, despite our best intentions, time (real times) slips away quickly while game time drags along sometimes. Anyway, we'll probably give it a shot that way and see how it goes. Doing that will also let us explore a higher-level game before we're all old and gray.

I'm working on getting my stuff together, so please keep standing by, and share thoughts/ideas if you'd like.

Let's get started with getting some characters generated! That way, while I work on story stuff to get us going, you can all work through the process of making characters as I'm sure there will be a few niggling issues as we convert to 5e. At least we'll get the ball rolling a little before I post for Players Wanted.
