The Outsiders (TV show) RPG

I'm currently working on a home brewed RPG based upon The Outsiders.  If you're not familiar with the show, it centers around a large "clan" that has lived, removed from society for 100 or more years, on a large, undeveloped mountain range in backwoods Kentucky.  A coal mining company is attempting to claim the mountain and have them removed (with the help of the local town whom the clans raid from time to time), but the Farrells (family name) have begun to fight back.  There's a lot more to the story and plot with room for various surprises but that is the basic rundown.

If you're familiar with the show, or even if you're not, I'd love to hear any ideas or suggestions you may have.  There's always something that can be overlooked so the more eyes on a project the more problems, mistakes or omittances that can be caught.

I do have a few quick questions actually. What system would you be using, if any? Would there be characters on both sides of the battle? Would they all be members of the same family? Would people be playing canon characters, or would the be original ones?

The Outsiders (TV show) RPG

Everything is still in the development stage but it wouldn't be following any particular rule system, per say, although I'm currently leaning towards a simple percentage-based system.  I'm trying to keep it fairly simple and streamlined, making it easier to play and allowing for a smoother flow (rules tend to slow games down at times).

I see no reason why players couldn't have characters other than clan members.

The actual "clan" itself is made up of several smaller clans, although there most certainly could be dozens of scattered clans including ones not affiliated with the main clan.

I'd be having people create their own characters.  I love the characters on the show but that's where they should stay.  The point of the game is simply to use the basic premise and setting but I wasn't planning on having any characters that exist from the show itself.
