IC: D&D characters in a  modern world

There was a GM request for a game set in the modern world involving recently arrived D&D/fantasy type characters.

I'm checking to see if there is enough interest in a game using Urban Arcana (D20 Modern) and newly arrived characters.

The given conversion rules in UA would make 1st level D&D 3.5 characters into level 4 Modern characters. That's probably the best level to start at.

I'm thinking 1st level characters, a basic plot hook of chasing something through a gate or portal, using Player created 3.5 characters converted by the DM (when the time comes) into D20M using the given conversion guidelines, including skill, class, and equipment limits.

There are rules for creating newly arrived characters starting in D20M as well, but why not start a bit earlier than first arrival?

Does this approach hold interest for anyone? If I can get enough interest I'll set up a game forum.

How about at least one character who may be a native in the modern world?

Also, to save you effort on conversions, I'd severely limit what books they can take stuff from. In fact, as they're going to be converted, I'd probably say something like 'SRD only'. I mean, I hate that limitation for total 3.5 games; but why go into the effort of making a warlock or a spellthief, if they're just going to be converted anyway?

Either way, I could be interested.

Sounds interesting. Would you be using the PHB or how many other side books would be tossed into the mix?. Add to that i have no familiarity with UA, but if it converts well then i am interested.

In reply to willvr (msg # 2):

The request was for a party out fo their element. Having aguide handy kind of defeats that.

And, yes, I had planned on limiting classes to what could be converted successfully to UA. But that's for if/when I post the game forum. This is just an interest check.

In reply to rgr (msg # 3):

Mostly PHB would be the limit, simply because of the limited conversion options both for classes and skills, and because the books for 3.5 wouldn't be used in a D20 modern game, anyhow. Many of the extra feats, skills, spells, etc won't actually exist aftert he conversion. The game isn't going to be about Desert or Ocean survival, after all, but Modern World survival.

I suppose some alternate races might be possible, but nothing with a level adjustment.  Personally, I'd prefer mostly humans and half humans. Humans seem rare as adventurers in games set in Human dominated worlds for some reason. I won't insist on it, but I'll limit some of the more esoteric racial options.

Call me interested if you decide to run a game.

Color me interested. I might toss out ideas during an RTJ that can pass as human.

I am throwing my name into the hat.

Like playing genre swap games. It's a whole heck of a lot of fun.

I'm only seeing 4 firm expression of interest, but I've set up a forum for the game with RTJ and character creation guidelines.

It will start in D&D 3.5, but rapidly end up in D20 Modern/Urban Arcana territory.
