Raising & Training Fantasy/Mythology/Folklore Monsters Game

Would anyone be interested in a game based around the Baby Bestiary and Baby Bestiary 2 by Metal Weave Games, two systemless handbooks about caring for and raising younger, cuter versions of typical fantasy RPG monsters as friends, companions, and/or guardians rather than slaying them?

The system used would be Mythic, very simple and easy to pick-up. Neither the Baby Bestiary nor Mythic would be needed for the game. Basically I'm just curious to know if anyone would be interested in a game about raising young fantasy/mythology/folklore monsters like basilisks, centaurs, dragons, kitsune, kobolds, minotaurs, sphinxes, gargoyles, harpies, gorgons, ogres, trolls, satyrs, unicorns, etc.

I'd be interested, I played in a similar game, though the monsters were not the cute variety, as a monster.

Well then, now that I know some people are interested, my second question is if anyone would still be interested if it is a game that doesn't focus on Pokémon-style combat pitting monster versus monster, but instead more on finding, rearing, and training baby monsters, and protecting them from poachers, with the characters as part of an order of beastmasters or something like that?

Should still be fun. It would be pretty cool to include some sentient/sapient creatures as well so they can have fun subplots and the like with their trainers/adopted parents.

Would youngling monsters be available as PCs, or would they be strictly NPCs?

Mythic is a system by Tom Pigeon, published by Word Mill Publishing. Characters are comprised of a summary (basically your character's concept, a paragraph that tells who your character is), their innate Attributes (Strength, Agility, Reflex, IQ, Intuition, Willpower, and Toughness), their Abilities (skills, talents, powers, etc. that the players make up themselves), Strengths and Weaknesses (what many other games might call merits and flaws, which give a bonus or penalty to certain areas that the character excels at or has difficult with, which are also made up by the players), and Notes (basically any other miscellaneous details the player feels like listing about their character, such as their appearance, age, any important people or organizations in their lives, equipment, and any other facts about the character that the player may want to keep track of). Attributes and Abilities are given a descriptive rank, ranging from Minuscule, Weak, Low, Below Average, Average, Above Average, High, Exceptional, Incredible, Awesome, and Superhuman

If you've ever used The Window system then this all might sound somewhat familiar.

Task Resolution and Combat is handled by comparing the ranks involved. If a character is performing an action that is being resisted by another character, then the ranks of the two relevant Attributes or Abilities are compared, any relevant modifiers that might cause a bonus or penalty to one side or the other are applied, and then a chart is consulted that gives the target number for success or failure. Rolling the target number or lower is good, rolling over the target number is bad. A really low roll is like a critical success and a really high roll is like a critical failure. If a player is not being resisted by another character and is instead based on simply how difficult an action is, then it functions the same way as the above except the character's rank is compared to an abstract rank that represents how difficult the action is.

That's pretty much most of it in a nutshell.

Between Baby Bestiary and Baby Bestiary 2, there are seventy-three creatures listed. Between all of them, their intelligence levels vary between being purely instinctual like a beast, having above average intelligence for a monster, and in some cases having intelligence that rivals or even surpasses that of the civilized races like humans and such.

OakMaster:
Would youngling monsters be available as PCs, or would they be strictly NPCs?

I had been intending for the monsters to be NPCs, and as of right now my ideas are going in that direction as having the player characters as being humans and the creatures being NPCs.

Now then, one question that would help me consider a few things, for those interested which of the following creatures would you most be interested in as a companion? As these are the aforementioned seventy-three creatures available, do any of these monsters sound like ones that would be interesting to have as a companion?

Satyr foal, Medusa's Daughter and Gelatinous Cube are right up my ally, but I'll be happy to play a human.

Ah, I edited my above post because maybe my last question wasn't clear, forgive me. What I meant was from that list, which of those monsters would people most be interested in having as their player character's companion, not as which of those monsters they'd want to play as.

As in, depending on what types of monsters people are most interested in having be in the game, it would influence the kind of game that I might come up with, such as the setting, theme and tone, and how many players would work.

No worries. The same choices would be my top three to raise: Satyr, Gorgon or Gelatinous Cube.

For me, it would be: Troll Buddie, Wyvern Elver, and Gelatinous Cubelet. I'd be fine with any of the other choices, too.

Re: Raising & Training Fantasy/Mythology/Folklore Monsters Game

All right then, since a few people are interested in this game concept, I have created the game so that I can discuss further about game ideas and such with those who are interested.
