Thinking about another Discussion Group

As "games" go, Discussion groups tend to not be very active, but they do tend to provide a hub where people can advertise and join a plethora of games. I've got two going right now. I have been in more than one in the past. I picked up Dungeon World a while back because the first Apocalypse World Engine game I played was MotW.

Dungeon World is based on different concepts and tends to run more reliably than MotW (I joined 2-3 of the latter than never really got off the ground, not sure why, but there you have it.) at least in my experience. Dungeon world has inspired me to write 3-4 playbooks (but I've only finished two)

I'm currently writing one hack for AWE (XCOM) and even have one more in mind (Harem Comedy). I even started a blog that is ostensibly about RPGs, but so far only has DW posts. It will host my hacks when I am done with them.

So of the three (AWE in general, DW, or Hacks) which Community Lounge would you guys like to see the most?

Thinking about another Discussion Group

Honestly I think just one PBtA ( Powered by the Apocalypse) discussion group/game with multiple forums would be enough. Would prevent people from getting too split up too.

That makes a lot of sense.

Thinking about another Discussion Group

I'm running two games for Uncharted Worlds which is pretty fun, and I think I'd love to be part of any PbtA games that come out and hearing about their nuances would be spectacular.

Thinking about another Discussion Group

One overall forum with a collection of subforums has worked well for FATE and other toolkit rulesets.

Neither of which are flagged as 'Discussion'; I had to search by your name to find them. If I didn't know you had them they would be almost impossible to locate.

In fact, there is only one Active Discussion Group listed as such at present, so it's no wonder they're 'not very active'.

C'mon guys, if you've got an active discussion group going, list it under 'Discussion' so that interested parties can find it.

It doesn't help that there are two ways of flagging up 'Discussion', one under Genre and one under Game System, and neither search will find the other unless the game owner has flagged his game in both ways.

These are my genre options
Action/Adventure     Ancient     Anime                Apocalyptic
Arena                Comedy      Contemporary         Drama
Eastern              Fantasy     Frontier/Western     Future
Historical           Horror      Intrigue             Medieval
Punk                 Sci-Fi      Strategy             Superhuman
Supernatural         Survival

If I'm doing a community lounge/discussion about a game system, it's counterintuitive to not state that game system. On the other hand, I would literally ONLY have discussion clicked if that were an option on the genre check boxes. But for some reason, I don't get that option.

Re: Thinking about another Discussion Group

If you want to set a game's genre to "Discussion", you need to send an rMail to the Moderators, so that we can judge whether it's warranted.  This is so that we don't end up with an RPing site filled with discussion boards about politics, pets, cooking and knitting patterns.  :)

It also gives us a chance to judge how much use the board would get.

Re: Thinking about another Discussion Group

@ Steelsmiter:

Weird, my Main Menu lists those, and also lists:

Discussion
Rpol Forums

Did I choose some view setting, way back, that adds these in?

@Bigbadron

Sounds reasonable provided RPG-related discussion groups are encouraged.

Re: Thinking about another Discussion Group

Discussion and RPoL Forums are on the search list, but not on the list of categories that GM's can assign for their games - as bigbadron says, that's something we Mods have to set, when a) requested and b) appropriate.  :>

Re: Thinking about another Discussion Group

Ah, right, Steelsmiter and I are looking at different lists. Thanks Skald.

It does explain why there are so few discussion groups and they're so hard to find, though, if people have to request for them to be made searchable but don't know they have to ask...

Can it perhaps be added to the assignation list but greyed out, so people know it's an option and can ask about it? Maybe, to head off most of the rejections before they ask, you could add a one-liner footnote to say:

*Rmail us for access, but it's for RP stuff not politics and pets.

Just seems like its an under-used resource for our hobby. :)

Discussion groups could stand to be more prevalent, and in all honesty I didn't know you could ask to have a Discussion Group made. I could have benefitted way earlier to have that little parenthetical somewhere on the genre selection page.

Re: Thinking about another Discussion Group

Perhaps Discussion as a genre should be relabelled "RPG Discussion" and be open to GMs to set themselves ... if someone would like to start us off in RPoL Development, I'd vote for that.  ;>

It's adult for reasons explained in the threads.
