GURPS Survey

I'm looking to see what the GURPS PLayers out there are really interested in.  In my face to face group there is usually a lot of discussion about expectations and such before too much work goes into building the setting so I'd like to try to do that here.

What are people clamoring for?  Fantasy, Sci-Fi, Something Modern?  Maybe There are certain optional rules or systems you'd love to try out?

Sorry if this is vague or not in the right place

In reply to DuelSaber (msg # 1):

Fantasy or Ultra Tech (TL 10+). I get enough of modern in reality... Although I wouldn't turn down Supers or Alternate World travel.

GURPS Survey

I've not tried to join a GURPS game in a while, but the games I find most interesting are the ones where GURPS is the best system for it.  For instance, there are plenty of games out there that do low fantasy as well or even better than GURPS.

However, GURPS does a really good job of bridging the gaps between different genres.  Also, some flavors of high-tech, though GURPS is terrible at transhumanism.

Alternate world travel and fantasy are quite fun in my experience.

In my experience GURPS shines in TL9 or TL10. There's a lot of great scifi and biopunk ideas to be had.

GURPS Survey

I was thinking recently that a TL 9-10 setting with a situation where enemies from an alternate dimension, or maybe even several, ala Torg, are invading the earth of the game, might be fun.

The characters would be elite operatives drawn from all over to resist the invaders. You could have martial artists, psis, biomodded spies or commandos, pretty much whatever you wanted to include, really.

Scenarios could range from straight up raids to recon missions, to diplomatic missions seeking allies against the invasion.

The discussion so far leads me to a couple main ideas.

1. Something like RIFTS kind of kitchen sink approach in TL 9-10 with the players being an elite team dealing with all the new strangeness as the world crumbles.

2. Stargate type of game that could happen at any TL really depending on whether we want it to be science or fantasy.  Other ideas fitting under this same umbrella include Something like Amber where the players would be unique in the ability to travel between worlds.

Espionage/Martial Arts type games work very well with GURPS as do low-magic Medieval Fantasy - my two genres of choice for this system.

Two things GURPS does well:

1. Power curve from normal folks to heroic adventurers is fairly smooth, depending on how you handle advancement. Tracking skill use and training offers a simulationist approach towards character growth, while allowing CP to be spent more freely still allows a fine-tuned realistic advancement. Incremental improvement.

2. Systemic approaches for "real life" downtime between adventures. Players can pursue goals, etc outside the focus of the campaign, giving a sense that the world is deeper than whatever the GM has planned. Even if you skim over the less interesting parts, they can still exist. This allows for viable characters who are more builders than straight up action heroes.

Thanks for the input everyone.  I'll see what I can put together in the next week or so.  Mainly making decisions on what subsystems to use and such

I think straight up wuxia would be awesome.  (GURPS: Shaw Bros!)

Sometime, I'd also like to try a GURPS: Cops campaign, possibly set in the 1950's.

I'd like to run GURPS Marvel Cops sometime. Ordinary detectives and patrol officers in the Marvel Universe.
