Nostalgia anyone

I find myself with a hankering to play or run the original D&D.
Anyone interested in a game?

That's 1!
Since you're the first, you get to have a larger say in setting/style etc?

My initial thought was Mystara, but could be convinced to invent a world, or something else?

high magic vs low magic

hack and slash vs puzzle vs politics/machinations?

Start at the beginning (1st lvl) or some other level?

Re: Nostalgia anyone

Topsy, any chance you could go with an OSR clone instead of original D&D itself? There are some really good ones out there such as Fantastic Heroes & Witchery, Adventurer, Conqueror, King System(ACKS), Beyond the Wall and Other Adventures, ASSH, LotFP, Sword & Wizardry, Labyrinth Lord, etc.

I would be really up for this if you consider any of the above.

As for the rest I would prefer low magic, combination of hack & slash with politics & machinations. Starting level low to mid tier.

Re: Nostalgia anyone

Mystara? Are you planning on original D&D, or the Basic/Expert?Immortal games sometimes referred to as OD&D?

I wouldn't mind digging out Men and Magic, et al, and the supplements, particularly Greyhawk and Blackmoor, but I'm less enthused about a B/E/I game.

sorry to dissapoint my friend.  But when I talk about original d&d, I mean the actual original D&D, not AD&D 1st ed rebranded.
I plan on using the cyclopedia as a rules base.

I'm not frightfully familiar with greyhawk, and not sure how well it back-translates too the original, but would be willing to give it a bash if enough folks want it.

That can be acomplished easily enough.  I could go with mystara and reign down the magic or create something new.  Some ideas are occuring to me.

"Greyhawk" was the fourth book published for the original D&D. It was also Gary Gygax's personal campaign setting. If you thought that the Basic/Expert series of rulebooks were the original, you are sadly a few years too late.

In reply to Topsy (msg # 7):

Sorry to tell you, I don't think you mean the original game. And I certainly don't mean 1st edition AD&D, which came out the same time and the Cyclopedia (the only thing I ever saw called Cyclopedia, anyhow) that was a compilation of basic/Expert/Immortal.

The original game is from 1974, 3 volumes in a box, by Gygax and Arneson (Men & Magic, Monsters & Treasure, and Underworld & Wilderness Adventures) followed by 4 supplements over the next two years: Greyhawk, Blackmoor, Eldritch Wizardry, and "Gods, Demigods & Heroes".

Greyhawk was Gygax's original setting and what the original rules were built around, so it actually works quite well.

For some reason "Original Game" doesn't actually mean the original game, anymore, so I like to double check.

Well, I learn something new every day!

I always thought the game that you are referencing was the same as the game I am thinking of, just compiled.

My first interaction with greyhawk was 1st ed ad&d.  So it sounds like I missed the first incarnation.

What I usually hear in reference too 'original' is first ed.  so yeah, it's always good to check

Re: Nostalgia anyone

I would be interested in playing in a game set in either Mystara or Greyhawk using these rules, right? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/...ons_Rules_Cyclopedia
Drop me a rMail when you start to get ready to put up the game.
