This is just a little thing that I'm just going to mention as I wind down for the night, but /tg/ created a system for playing Neon Genesis Evangelion using the Warhammer 40k RPG system (Dark Heresy, 1e). They eventually moved away from that base system to create their own, but it's still a pretty good idea.

Yes, you heard that right, now you can get into the robot! You can become a pile of traumas that has to overcome them everytime you climb into the robot to survive! You can fight Angels that blatantly rip off the style of mythologies without having to worry much about the actual substance! Or do it well and actually have deep and philosophical meaning in your giant robot game. It's your oyster, have fun with it.

Are there be any specific restrictions upon character choice beyond the rulebook?

This was originally just a simple interest check to see if people knew about the game, but it's turned into a bit of furtile ground in terms of plot. Before I get much into it, I know more about 2.5 (mostly since it is "finished"), but 3 has streamlined the game pretty well. I'd go with either one.

So far I have a set of three plot ideas, mostly in terms of overall mythos. The current ideas is following the main series (but actually making the Abrahamic imagery mean something), the world stuck in an eternal winter with the players a part of ODIN (Norse) and the world stuck in eternal night and eternal darkness (Zoroastrism).
