Statler and Waldorf

I have an idea.  I would take two people that could do comedy.  The premise would be to do an RPG that is completely meta.  Two characters watching the other games and talking to the audience from the balcony.

If it could be done in such a way that avoided any commenting about the playing of the characters involved in the games, I'd be interested in watching that.

In my experience though, there's a very fine line between amusing comedy that gets people laughing, and comedy that causes hurt feelings.

Probably the best way to avoid this would be for games to ask for inclusion into the premise.  I say games as the GM and Players would all have to want it.

It would bring added visibility to otherwise little noticed games and give the GM a chance to show off as well as Players along with people wanting to possibly generate more fans of systems.  The trade off being a requirement of having a thick skin and knowing you have the possibility of being teased.  Kind of like signing up for a Comedy Central Roast.

Why nut just go all in?

Muppet based RPG!

I think you'd end up having to do both the story "on stage" and the hecklers to make this work.  A game like Monsters and Other Childish Things would probably work well enough.

You could do it in an MST3K way, where the two comedians insert OOC commentary as the adventure goes along. I agree the players & GM involved would need to be on-board for this and recognize that there will be jokes aimed at them and their characters. That being said, if and when, I'm one of the two people who can do comedy that you're looking for.

My gut tells me that the way to handle this is to focus the game on the stage and then have the players freely able to add in the heckling for bonuses, rerolls, reduced damage, etc.

While those premises might work as well, I for one have trouble seeing one game coming up with that much comedy gold.  A slew of games that Statler and Waldorf could look at and pick and choose from would have better humor involved from not having to stretch jokes and grate less on the butt of the joke as one person will likely not be the target repeatedly.

Well if it goes ahead, I'd be interested seeing what you do with it.

I'm wondering, can you have multiple people control a character?  This would make the comedy come along quicker (by having people read more games) and not put all the comedy 'weight' on two shoulders.

Well, you could make everyone involved a GM.

Or have slight adjustments of 'Statler1' 'statler2' and so forth. Though it might work best if you make sure it's the same 2 people teamed up together all the time.

That's all I can think of
