[IC/Advice] Medieval Superheros

So I've had this idea banging aroud in my head for a long time about medieval versions of superheroes. I'm thinking at least a 10th level campaign using PF or D&D 5e rules.

Aside from the interest check for a campaign of this style, I'm looking for advice on what kind of campaign players would like. Namely one big story, lots of little stories? Center the story in one city, or have the band travel the world?

Also, I would prefer to run this with DND 5e rules, however I would be open to a PF game. Please don't suggest other systems.

"Medieval versions of superheroes". Hmm. Maybe… sorta-kinda like Neil Gaiman's 1602 series, and its sequels?

Superheroing is a rather different genre than D&D-esque fantasy. The superhuman abilities shouldn't be all that tough to implement in D&D—there's any number of races with exotic powers, and when all else fails, there's magic items and curses—but it's not immediately clear how much of the usual complement of superhero tropes will work in a D&D-esque setting. Then again, it's also not clear how much of those tropes need to work in a D&D-esque setting…

Can you flesh out the concept a bit more, please?

Re: [IC/Advice] Medieval Superheros

I have no idea what that series is. Never heard of it. Sounds like it's worth checking out.

What I mean is well...what I mean. PF/D&D versions of superheroes. Off the top of my head a Hawkeye build would probably be a Fighter with a focus on Archery. A Captain America build would probably be that one shield AT for Fighters with shield of returning. A Black Widow build would probably be a Rogue with heavy focus on infiltration and stealth with some kind of magic item that granted shocking grasp. Hulk would probably be some Barbarian/Monk multiclass or some kind of Alchemist AT (from what I've been told, I'm not familiar with Alchemist).

Whether players would actually want to BE those heroes is one thing. It's more of a loose concept. More like an "inspired by" campaign.

I agree with Cubist, the first thing that came to my mind was 1602.  There also is Medieval Spawn, a sort of medieval superhero with a very heavy religious tone.

Re: [IC/Advice] Medieval Superheros

For folks interested in more info: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marvel_1602 :)

I have played in a MSH-FASERIP medieval supers type of campaign, where the supers had to be cautious about overt displays of power, lest they be targeted by the Inquisition...  :o

Having that wrinkle on top of the usual good guys trying to stop the bad guys, and with the refreshing change-of-pace setting, made a very enjoyable campaign.

I haven't played DnD since v3.5, but if the newfangled version is similar, it might be tricky to build some types of supers.  For example, how would you build a teleporter like Nightcrawler in DnD5 or PF?  Supers often have a narrow focus for powers (such as being an excellent teleporter, but without other powers)...

If I was able to build a super rather than a fantasy character, I would be very interested in a medieval supers campaign.  :)

Re: [IC/Advice] Medieval Superheros

That sounds really cool, kind of like Shining Knight or Nathan Blood/Etrigan? I could see D&D 5e allowing you to do some fun things with that concept, like DC's Shadowpact set in Sword and Sorcery times.

If I wasn't swamped with work, I might try running a game like that of my own.

One suggestion, use a first edition style of normal guy on the street. No, class levels, only minimum HPs. With a listing of skills,  including weapons skills instead of feats.  It will create a more Heroic feel to the players.

I think it would be fun with 5th, depends on what level of superhero you are going for.  Some are just training and focus + immense wealth.  Others are supernatural grinding physics to dust.
