I'm up for a guided-freeform/blackbox set up for such a game. Perhaps some sort of Homebrew, wish I could offer more than that for suggestion. I have a generic RPG system, but I've yet to configure it for starship or mobile suit fights.+

Yes, I think a system a little less crunchy will be better suited to what I have in mind.

I think Fate could work pretty well, especially since it already has several possible variants for a mecha system. Do tell me, do you actually intend to call the Jedi the Jedi, the Sith the Sith, the Gundams the Gundams and so on? I think it could be worthwhile to make a clean break while making an "inspired by" setting. Especially since you're changing a lot already.

In reply to von_das (msg # 5):

Hmm, no, I plan on keeping the names for Jedi, at least, and the Force. As I mentioned above, I'll be calling them Mobile Armours and Mobile Suits.

What size are you thinking for the mobile armor???

In comparison to cannon Star Wars mobile weapons platforms?
The mechs stand "head" to "head" with AT-AT's, with the AT-ST standing to the mechs hip/torso?
or
The mechs stand to the AT-AT's back hump, so the AT-ST is closer to the theigh/knee?

In my option the first would be fun, it would set up so the AT-AT would still be intimidating and set up hand to hand combat with Rancors...

Oh my gawd...

Hand to hand combat mech vs. rancor. That just sounds to fun to pass up.
Either that or reinacting the famous Conan punching out a camel with an AT-AT.

I've never tried a free-form game and haven't really cared to. I would definitely change my stance on that for something like this. Star Wars and mecha(gundam or otherwise) are two of my favorite things. I'd also be willing to learn a new system.

Question: are the Jedi, or other force users, the only ones who can pilot the mobile armors?

In reply to Gray-Exile43 (msg # 8):

I'm going for the Mobile Suits to range from five to ten meters tall, within range of the AT-STs, depending on their combat role. While I might still include AT-AT walkers, I'm not sure if the scout walker's role can't already be filled by a squad of Mobile Suits. We'll see.

Mobile Armours could very well reach 20+ meters, but that depends on the Armour, because each is a unique configuration.

In reply to eggellis (msg # 9):

Mobile Suits feature modern avionics suites, as well as advanced software routines for tracking, weapons targeting, et cetera (though in the retro Star Wars style).

Mobile Armours, as befitting their ancient legacy weapon status, possess two sticks, as well as an arcane screen of switches, for piloting the entirety of the Armour. The Force is almost required to pilot one of these things, though someone with lots of luck and skill, or both, could probably manage it for a short time.

I like the idea of having mobile suits and armours.

That way you could have a suit of three or four suits running with a armour or two to mix it up with some "small" arm fire and heavy artillery.
Are you going to allow the pilots to wield giant light sabers to replicate the beam sabers the Gundams used?

Also what system are you planning on useing. I am not a fan of free form but am pretty sure you could meld the SWSE and d20 future supplement to add robotic suit/armours to blend into a flawless system. I know that every system has flaws but I figure with a little re-tooling they could match up nicely.

Most likely, yes. :)

Well, while I'm not going to go full freeform, I don't think I will go with d20 simply because I don't want to bog down gameplay with mechanics, as can happen. If I do use d20, it will be blackbox, where the players don't need to worry about that sort of thing during gameplay. Or I might go for a narrative system like Fate. But as I said before, I'm leaning towards the blackbox system, simply because it would be easier for me.

Re: IC: Star Wars/MS Gundam saga remix!

Are you going to want the Jedi to pick Jedi like classes? Like the Consular and the guardian? Or do we just all say hey we are jedis and we kick ass?

Or do the pilots just have to be force-sensitive?

if it's freeform or something easy to pick up on, I'd be VERY interested.

Re: IC: Star Wars/MS Gundam saga remix!

Here are my thoughts on how the game will go.

The game itself will be using the plot of Star Wars as an outline or skeleton. Each player can choose one of the primary archetypes as their character:

THE POWER TRIO (HERO, HEROINE, ROGUE) - Example: Luke Skywalker, Leia Organa, Han Solo

THE MESSENGER - Example: R2-D2, C-3PO

THE MENTOR - Example: Obi-Wan Kenobi

THE BIG BAD - Example: Grand Moff Tarkin

THE DRAGON - Example: Darth Vader

The game will follow many of the same beats, but with different circumstances and settings. For example, there will be no Tatooine or other desert planet. There will probably not be a Death Star. But the Messenger trying to escape the villain and deliver an all-important message will be a large part of the game's initial plot, though the players may change things through the course of play.

I'm still working on getting the game set up, so please be patient. :)

I'm in! What system are we looking at? I think Edge of the Empire/Force and Destiny could definitely handle this.

You've got me psyched! Count me in.
I'd view for FATE rules too. Less dice,  more narrative.
