IC for co-run sandbox in Pathfinder or D&D 5e

I am thinking about putting together a game in either Pathfinder or D&D 5e that would be sandbox style with fairly significant kingmaker or downtime RP. I would run an event once a month or so that might take 1-3 weeks to resolve.

The Co-Run part would be that each player would be given a second character noted as NPC and they could run any NPC action for other players. There would be limits and controls on what those NPCs could do but they could run the businesses and manage the interaction. This would also prevent an active player getting tied up with an inactive player.

XP would be given out on a weekly basis for main character RP, RPing as NPCs and participation in events and quests. I would set it up so that a fully active person would be able to gain a level every 4-6 weeks to keep the pace moving. This means that in < 2 years if the game is successful, we could have epic heroes running around.

Once established, I would even be willing to let players run quests or encounters that I setup with them before hand. My control in these would be limited to making sure the encounter is balanced with the rewards it offers and doesn't outright murder those embarking on it.

The group would start based out of a smallish town but it would grow as they develop the businesses and as the renown of the heroes grow.

Anyone interested? Any preference on Pathfinder or 5e? Any suggestions on what might make this successful?

I would be interested in this. Letting folks run plots for other players lets people who enjoy DMing and playing (e.g. me) have an outlet with a single group. Plus, it helps reduce DM burnout which is definitely a problem when you're constantly running stories for folks. I am super thirsty for some 5th Edition, so that would be my preference!

Sounds like an interesting concept. I don't actually know 5th edition, but I'm pretty solid with Pathfinder.

@chevalle, That was part of the thought. I would like to not get burnt out and keep the game moving, and I think having the players take a larger hand in role playing would help that, it would also allow much of the story to move without me posting in response continuously.

So that's a vote for Pathfinder and a vote for 5e. I'll leave this up for a bit and see if anyone else bites.

i might be interested depending on when it starts up (too busy this semester). i would vote for PF as well. also, what level are you thinking for starting out, and would you consider gestalt and non-core stuff? when you say the players will also run npc characters, are you thinking the players will control all the npc's for the town, or only a few of them?

So it looks like there might be more interest in Pathfinder. I don't do Gestalt. I am fine with Dreamscarred press and other 3rd party stuff by approval. If I open the game It will most likely be Early December that I am able to open it and It would be until After the first of the year that I could start the game in full.

pathfinder works, because it would also be able to incorporate the Stronghold builder's guide.

Not sure on level to start most likely 4-6 range.

Players would control most if not all NPCs in the town. Player A walks into a bar and orders a drink. Any player other than player A is welcome to post as the NPC interacting. With some limitations.

Exp and awards would be given for good PC and NPC roleplaying.

If there's still room, I'd love to join, regardless of system, the idea sounds very intriguing

IC for co-run sandbox in Pathfinder or D&D 5e

If anyone has thoughts or advice I have changed the initial idea and done a 5e game where instead of giving the players NPCs, I am allowing them be in 2 places at once, in town RPing and on an adventure. I am also letting players make and run adventures for each other with oversight from me as to what the encounters will contain and what the loot will be.

Thoughts on what to watch out for or how I can best oversee these player led encounters?
