Post-Apocalyptic Sandbox

Greetings everyone! I am new here on this site, but nonetheless I am hoping to start running a game and to find people to play in it here. Being familiar with the rules or owning the rulebook for said game are not required.

The game I have in mind is Other Dust, an old school D&D-esque game that has many rules that most of you will recognize (rolling 3d6 for stats, skill lists, d20 for attack roles, etc) but there is the distinction that, rather than taking place in a fantasy world inspired by European myths, this game takes place in the far future, long after civilization has been shattered and the earth ruined.

If you are a fan of the Fallout series of games, or any other kind of post-apocalyptic fiction, this kind of world should be instantly familiar to you. This is a world of blasted hellscapes, littered with the skeletons of once great cities and crawling with mutated horrors. For most survivors of the events that brought about the end of the world as we know it, just living day to day is all that can be hoped for. For the player characters however, there is a chance for something more.

The PCs will be adventurers, similar to the kind you might find in any fantasy adventure. You will plunder the tombs of the ancients, to uncover their long-lost mysteries and arm yourselves with their amazing technology. You will fight monsters and raiders, and spend your downtime in one of the many small, furtive settlements that have managed to eke out their living in the ruined world.

Perhaps most interestingly of all, this game system has been designed from the ground-up to provide a sandbox experience, so there will be no huge, overarching narrative or quest for the characters to follow - at least, not any that the players do not come up with on their own. This will be an exercise in almost complete freedom, as the players will be able to go anywhere and do anything that they choose, even if that means ignoring the quests that I do offer them and going off to look for treasure or just explore the wilderness.

If this kind of game sounds interesting to you, let me know! If I get enough takers then I'll set up the game proper and we can talk rules and character creation.

Post-Apocalyptic Sandbox

I don't own the system, but if it is easily and cheaply available, then I would be very interested in this type of game.

Post-Apocalyptic Sandbox

In reply to Murphy4 (msg # 2):

The game can be found here: http://www.drivethrurpg.com/pr...;affiliate_id=323031

It's not exactly cheap, but as I mentioned, owning the rule book is not a requirement. The system is incredibly simple to learn for anyone who is familiar with old-school D&D-style games. I will be walking everyone through the character creation process, and after that, it should be smooth sailing, rules-wise.

If you would like to get a taste of what the rules are like, however, Other Dust has a sister game in the form of Stars Without Number: http://www.drivethrurpg.com/pr...Number:-Free-Edition which is free to download and uses the exact same rules system - the only real differences are the setting and flavour.

Well, technically, SwN is the mother game. ;)
But Kaithulhu is right when telling that it's not necessary to own the rules. They are fairly simple and most of the book content is mainly useful for the GM to help him create his world. I won't join the game myself as I have already too many games to follow but you can be sure that I would have join if I had more time.
Good luck with your game Kaithulhu. And if you need help, feel free to rMail me. I'm a SwN GM myself so I can help you if needed. :)

Re: Post-Apocalyptic Sandbox

I'd love to get in on this, but I'd be one more player that would need to learn the rules as we went along.
