IC: Anima, notHogwarts Edition

You get a letter.   It falls through your chimney, or perhaps is blown through your open window.   Maybe it was handed to you personally by a person you'd never met before in your life but could swear looked familiar, or could be dropped by a passing raven spooked by your approach.   However the mechanism, you know the letter is meant for you, and you alone.

Even those who try to ignore its summons are stalked by that black envelope with the gold wire and crimson wax seal, until its presence cannot be ignored... lest the Inquisition itself come to your village, your farm, your city or your cottage.

You have been called to the Empire's School for the Gifted.   It is a place of study and reflection, separated from the rest of the world by the magic-dampening effects of the inner sea.   It is simultaneously a refuge and a prison.   A great opportunity for those inspired to the mystic arts, and a containment measure for potential wildfires in human form.

You are brought here, leaving behind everything but the clothes on your back and a few mementos from home, just enough to fill a single satchel.  You life in the world of magic begins now...

Looking to start a game of anima up focused on all magic characters, starting as children between the ages of 12-17.   Regardless of age, everyone manifests with the same experience, and thus the same potential.

Questions I wanna ask, though:
1: Should this be run with everyone starting at lvl 0 with a free CP, or lvl 1?
2: How big of a PC party?
3: The Gift of Magic will be required, as this is a mage-and-wizard focused campaign... but do you want to have any other requirements for character creation?
4: Is anyone interested in playing nephilem, or shall we simplify and just do humans?
5: Anything not yet mentioned that you'd like to see in the campaign?  Particular creatures, events, locations, or even familiar faces from the ANIMA:BF setting as instructors?

Re: IC: Anima, notHogwarts Edition

Ahh... Anima. My one love... besides my other loves.

Well, in order:

1. I'd suggest Level 0. I don't know why you'd be looking at a free CP for Level 0's, since I've never seen anything that limits their CP (but I miss things. There are a lot of Anima books...) but Level 0 most accurately reflects someone around that age and before they receive official training, as I imagine you're looking for. I mean, it's possible some would have more experience than others, but generally I'd say Level 0 would work best for this.

2. I honestly have very little experience with school games, but I think any game that gets above 5-6 people is too big. Personal opinions being what they are. Also, if this game gets anywhere near high level, a party bigger than five is a little ridiculous, especially one full of mages (who will likely cross disciplines by then).

3. I don't have... requirements, per se, but if we're playing Magic I'd have a lot of questions, like whether or not we're using Arcana Exxet, whether summoners would be allowed in the school, whether Warlocks or other mixed classes would be allowed in, etc. Just some general things.

4. Nephilim or no is up to you. I'm perfectly fine with either.

5. I want a Sheeeeeeeeeeele. But I can understand how that would be both hard and potentially a little game-breaking at times. I'd also like to know more about how you'd handle PbP combat, something about how you plan to justify this school's existence, and some other things which should probably discussed within the game itself and not here. You know, stuff that isn't necessarily "Input" or "Advice".

Re: IC: Anima, notHogwarts Edition

Okay, level 0's with standard creation rules, then.

As far as books that are being allowed, truly anything is possible.   The only restriction I'm going to place is on equipment: I will not be allowing the use of Promethium Exxet by the players, but anything from core, GMToolkit, Arcana Exxet, Gaia Vol1, Those Who Walked Amongst Us and even Dominus Exxet will be allowed.

I will be open to any of the classes, even wacky stuff like Tao/technician FatigueFarmers, or Dark Paladins with Sheele boosted by their high control, high MA/Innate magic sorcerors or even invokers/arcanists/summoners.

However, I want to enforce the "Gift of Magic" requirement to put everyone on a more-or-less even playing field... and since the gift can be detected through Magic Appraisal, but knowledge of the occult is a little harder to "test" for.   The idea is that the inquisition and the templars have compromised with several of the other factions, establishing the school as a means of not only registering and recording witches, mages, and warlocks for later employment... but also as a concentration camp where they can be easily controlled, suppressed, and if needs be imprisoned by Tol Rauko or worse.  If you have any better backstory suggestions, though, I'm open to them.

Also, I would love it if someone had a Sheele.   They add a lot of depth to single-facet characters when used right.

In reply to Damian_Alpha (msg # 1):

This sounds sweet. I'm in, if the book(s) are available for free.

Re: IC: Anima, notHogwarts Edition

What frequency are you expecting for posting?  I work during the week and have my family to take care of and spend time with.

I only own the original book, but I would like to try this, if there is room and the timing is right.  It has been a long time since I read it.

How would you do attributes since the campaign focuses on specific attributes?

Re: IC: Anima, notHogwarts Edition

Character creation can be done in-game.  Stats will be d10 x8, minimum 3, no free boosts... but you can shuffle the numbers around however you wish.

As for posting speed, don't worry too much.  Once a week is fine, more is great.  I'm planning to make it fairly open ended, with "magic studies" taking up most of the schedule until we get a good party interaction and some plot-hooks dropped in.   It'll be very Elder Scrolls-esque, with me prompting a few options but leaving the choice of "Something Else" also available.

If you're not familiar with the rules, I'll have a "walkthrough" thread to show everyone the basics.  The only dice you have to worry about are D10 and D100's, so there's not much you have to memorize.

Looks like we have 3 people interested, so I'll draft it up and get the game up by this weekend so everyone can pitch concepts and make characters together.
