[FFG Star Wars] Three Ideas... Can't Decide

I’m torn…

My original idea was for a game set in the New Sith Wars. The Republic is on the defensive, having abandoned the Outer, Mid-Rim, parts of the Expansion Region to the Sith. The Sith themselves have reformed under a quasi-feudal culture that celebrated power and conquest. The obvious focus would be on Jedi heading out on their own to take the fight to the Sith. Non-Force characters would definitely be allowed. Basically, a Rebellion fight with Sith, lightsabers and so on.

Here is a summary of the setting…
https://community.fantasyfligh...tting-new-sith-wars/

But, as I was reading old material I had worked on, I did revive a hankering for a good ol’ straight Edge of Empire game. Set in the Elrood/Minos sectors, where the characters would be mercenaries, smugglers, bounty hunters, or just simple traders trying to survive amidst Imperial entanglements, crime lords, and other threats in the galaxy. Edge of Empire and supplements only, no Force-Users period. While the Rebellion may be around and offering jobs, it would not be the focus of this game.

The second campaign would be for folks who are interested in the nuts and bolts of surviving on the Rim. It would definitely feature cinematic adventure but we would also be using the hacked Trading/Smuggling rules from Tramp Freighters and the crew would have to keep their ship in repair. Sort of a Star Wars/Firefly, a definitely different feel than most of FFG Star Wars games out there. The Minos/Elrood sectors are both far enough away that we can play with the published material and add much of our own.

A third idea, to touch on all the fun that Star Wars could produce would be during the New Republic with a strong Imperial Remnant and lots of independent systems in between. The war to throw out the Empire lasted longer and Thrawn’s push was more successful than canon. The drive out of the Deep Core resulted in an influx of Dark Side force-users who went rogue or stayed with the Imperials. The characters would be either independent mercenaries/trouble-shooters or agents of the New Republic.

This campaign is superficially similar to the New Sith Wars and features all three corebooks. Basically, an excuse to go out and get into trouble without an overly victorious New Republic, or a weak Imperial enemy. The systems in conflict are struggling to stay alive and all factions are stretched thin.

The characters are independents, New Republic trouble-shooters, New Republic privateers (for those who like space battles) or even just pirates.

So, I can’t decide… what sounds interesting to folks?

I always say go with what sounds the most fun to run, but I'd be super interested in the first pitch. I'm interested in all of them, but would rank them as 1, 3, 2 in order of interest.

Please keep us in the loop! ^_^

Re: [FFG Star Wars] Three Ideas... Can't Decide

The New Sith Wars with nifty lightsaber battles in space would be pretty cool, provided of course that the PCs started with a significant enough chunk of XP to actually be proper Jedi instead of cannon fodder. I don't think it would be very interesting if the PCs weren't important, elite people doing important, elite things.

For reference, the game-provided example of a full-fledged Jedi is the Jedi-In-Hiding in Age of Rebellion.

Re: [FFG Star Wars] Three Ideas... Can't Decide

I'd probably rank them 3/2/1, in part because I only have the AotR book at the moment. Thematically, I'm not so keen on the first one because it's thematically limited - something better suited to a one-shot rather than long-term play. Likewise, I'm a bit wary of the "Age of Accounting" that could result from the idea of having to track ship operations/funds/repairs in detail - that sort of thing is tedious enough to deal with IRL, and it rarely makes for interesting story/character development compared to a more abstract approach.

How is it limited? The New Sith Wars went on for a thousand years and the opportunities for stories abounds in the lawless regions even outside fighting the Sith. The main point of putting it there though would be lots of lightsaber fighting. But in the end, it's a war with countless variety. In that respect, it wouldn't be any more limiting than Age of Rebellion.

Yeah, this one is far more suited for Traveller-type folks who are into that sort of thing.

For the first one, would you use Knight Rules for Jedi and Non-Jedi starting XP?

Re: [FFG Star Wars] Three Ideas... Can't Decide

I'm working on starting builds at this point. I'm a novice Star Wars/FFG GM and have only run one tabletop session. I don't want to get in over my head without being prepared. That being said, my original plan was one Padawan-level adventure (baseline XP). Make it super-quick and get some background into the characters. Then jump 3-5yrs ahead and grant the bonus XP.

Since its a war, the characters would be pushed out of training before the standard Old Republic level. But my current build is:

JEDI: 120xp and one free lightsaber specialization, lightsaber
NON: 125xp and one free specialization, 10K credits or vehicle

No Signature Abilities and no skills above 2, except for one at 3 at character generation.

Allowing Jedi to take the Mentor bonus for Force powers. An Old Republic Jedi should probably have +1 Force Rating but I think that's getting in over my head. So, I'll just justify the lack of it by crash-training...

That being said, there's interest so I'll just name the game. It will be awhile yet until I set the game up. Don't hold your breath. Feel free to rmail me to get a notification.

Also, Force and Destiny's status just moved to "Shipping" so two weeks and it will be in stores. Best to wait for that anyways.

Re: [FFG Star Wars] Three Ideas... Can't Decide

There is a fourth option... basically, it's the third one but following the new canon for the Force Awakened. Taking up events about a decade later, the Empire holds the Core and Inner Rim along with various fortress regions. The New Republic is now the Resistance and holds the sectors around Hoth.

Dark Side adepts, stormtroopers, a more recognizable enemy. Hmmm...

Re: [FFG Star Wars] Three Ideas... Can't Decide

I'm interested in all three. The idea for the second is it sandbox? The first I would imagine would be more structured or am I wrong?

I think I prefer idea three to four but could be persuaded.
