Nomic: A Game of Self-Amendment

Nomic is, essentially, a game that you play by changing the rules. Written in 1990, it's a set of rules that include a really basic 'game' (roll a die each turn, you win if your total reaches 100), with a set of rules that govern adding or changing the existing rules.

Basically, low-impact bureaucracy.

The thing is, a game of Nomic can last a very long time, especially if rules are added that give it longevity (such as a way to 'reset' back to a previous stage if someone 'wins'). You're actively encouraged to change the base goal -- maybe not immediately, but at least before someone wins -- and the way to meet that goal may change over time.

I tried one of these a very very long time ago, and it broke down for some reason. I think someone was trying to argue that the definition of a term was wrong. (As in, the dictionary definition. Like claiming "won't" means the same as "can't" or the like.) I think if we had someone with 'executive' status, who could override things when someone's stalling, it would run better.

There'd be a lot of rules-lawyering and debate, but that's kinda the point.

I've no idea how this would go, but I'm terribly intrigued by it.

Re: Nomic: A Game of Self-Amendment

I played in an RPoL Nomic game in 2007, and another in 2009-2010.  Fascinating game.  Count me as interested.  :)

BTW, which player were you in the old game, LonePaladin?

I don't remember. It was a very long time ago, so there's a non-zero chance it was one of the games you mentioned.

Re: Nomic: A Game of Self-Amendment

Just in case this joggles some rusty brain cells...

2007: Yoss (GM), Chryssie, Cyrik, Jimmy B, Leto, Oak, Quite, Rabbitball
2009: Narrator (GM), Asher, AvalonXQ, Cheshire, Fremanofkol, JaqueThay, Kymeric, LonePaladin, Oakmaster, Princess With A Pea

*blink*  *blink*

Never mind.  I think I figured it out already...  :p

Re: Nomic: A Game of Self-Amendment

*laughs* Yeah, that would be me.

Well, some interest is enough to justify giving it a try. Here's the game!
