IC: The Dark Knight

I loved the Dark Knight series, and I think everyone can agree that, although it wasn't perfect, it was certainly a very interesting take on Batman and his world.

What intrigues me is the idea of how ordinary people behave when wearing a mask, or when facing a mask. A mask is essentially a living symbol, as was embodied by the characters in those movies. Have you ever seen a play in which a skilled actor wears a mask? You'll have seen the power that a mask can convey.

I want to create a game in which the characters, otherwise ordinary people, don masks and adopt mythical identities. You will not be required to be good, or bad, or crimefighters, or anything. This will be the real world, present-day, with a 'superhero' or 'supervillain' dropped into it.

Re: IC: The Dark Knight

Are you looking at using any particular system or keeping it freeform? Would masked ideals have existed before or would the PC's be the first?

Re: IC: The Dark Knight

I'm not sure what system we would be using right now. Not freeform; I want there to be the possibility of everyone being surprised by random factors.

The idea of people wearing masks and 'fighting crime' or whatever would exist much as it has already: occasionally some nut or criminal wears a mask, but it is rarely more than a momentary novelty with little impact on society. It would be up to you to impress on people that you are somehow special.

M&M can support a no powers system, though it would be like using a motorcycle motor for a lawn mower

I agree. I want to find a system that is designed to simulate real people in real situations, so that the addition of masked heroes/villains seems more jarring both in-world and out.

Re: IC: The Dark Knight

I have been playing in a game with cortex plus supers as the rule system. It works very well for dynamic player driven action and is easy to learn. With a good group of players I think it could really bring the dark knight game to life.

Re: IC: The Dark Knight

Fate could also be a pretty decent system for it. With the stunts and such.

Re: IC: The Dark Knight

I'm never going to run another FATE game online. You depend too much on people collaborating, and so if one member goes AWOL mid-process, suddenly the entire game is derailed.

In reply to LordIce (msg # 8):

I've found that's the case if you go with the Fate character creation/world creation as it is written in the books. But if you disregard the collaborative stuff, and create the world yourself and allow characters to be created without input from the others, can just get to the game itself.

Re: IC: The Dark Knight

I don't have an abundance of RP books, so I would recommend Heroes Unlimited if I had to choose, though that's more for mutants than totally normal humans. That being said, the idea itself is intriguing, and I would definitely be in if possibly not having the book for whatever system you choose isn't a deal breaker. (I have nothing against others rolling for me, btw)

Re: IC: The Dark Knight

What about d20 Modern? It can support powers but doesn't actually do so.
Or although the chargen takes awhile GURPS can do it.
I think for batman you would need something like mutants and masterminds or d20 Modern. If you wanted an Adam West feel to it there's d20 Past, Spirit of the Century also can give that flair even though its FATE.

Re: IC: The Dark Knight

I find d20 modern to be unbalanced. It mixes abstract and detail to the detriment of both, especially in combat. One sword swing = one bullet, shotguns are universally worse than rifles, and Fast heroes are better in melee combat than Strong heroes.

Re: IC: The Dark Knight

There's something about the story that I've decided.

When you join, you will pick one of the characters that already exists. Most of their character backstory will be written. You will be able to create some of the details, such as what they went to college for, and some of the reflected statistics.

I still don't know what rules system to use. It needs to be gritty & real, probably designed more for martial arts or spying than for superheroic combat.
