(IC) Star Blazers: Space Battleship Yamato

So as a child I watched the original Star Blazers. Yes I'm that old :)

I have always wanted to play and or GM a Star Blazers type Universe RPG. I first wanted to see if there is anyone interested in this idea?

I'm looking to put together a mature ANIME game with a feel and style of play thats both interesting and fun. It will have its moments of humor, and at times even some silliness. BUT its not meant to be one big joke. Characters will die, have relations, and heavy RPing with some details.

The storyline will follow most of the major events as the Original US show that aired in 1979. The game would have elements of the classic Argo, and the new Yamato 2199. The focus would be to play and RP the main characters, add some new characters to the story and the freedom of anything is possible for the outcome as we play. That means Major NPCs could be killed off or live, and a completely different alternate story ark is possible.

If interested please reply, if you have any add on ideas to this please post them. If this gets up and running I will be looking for CO-GMs.

Grew up on the old Star Blazers and was a huge fan of the live-action 2010 movie.  So you've certainly got my interest!

Re: (IC) Star Blazers: Space Battleship Yamato

I was working on and thinking of using a stripped down Green Ronin system but I just saw this and was wondering if any has used it in a PBP game here yet.

Mindjammer – The Roleplaying Game (Fate Core)

I have never used it before, (don't know anything about it) but I read it would work for this setting .... any thoughts?

Re: (IC) Star Blazers: Space Battleship Yamato

Some extra info if your not familiar with the setting;

Space Battleship Yamato is a Japanese science fiction anime series featuring an eponymous spacecraft. In North American it was known as Star Blazers.

It is one of the first series in the history of anime, marking a turn towards more complex serious works and influencing works such as Mobile Suit Gundam and Neon Genesis Evangelion; Hideaki Anno has ranked Yamato his favorite anime and credited it with sparking his interest in anime.

Yamato was the first anime series or movie to win the Seiun Award, a feat not repeated until the 1985 NausicaƤ of the Valley of the Wind.

The storyline begins in the year 2199, an alien race known as the "Gamilas" ("Gamilons" in Star Blazers) unleash radioactive meteorite bombs on Earth, rendering the planet's surface uninhabitable. Humanity has retreated into deep underground cities, but the radioactivity is slowly affecting them as well, with humanity's extinction estimated in one year. Earth's space fleet is hopelessly outclassed by the Gamilas and all seems lost until a message capsule from a mysterious crashed spaceship is retrieved on Mars. The capsule yields blueprints for a faster-than-light engine and an offering of help, the Cosmo DNA, which can cleanse Earth of its radiation damage.

The game will involve themes of brave sacrifices, noble enemies, and respect for heroes lost in the line of duty. Player will take on the characters in the series and the storyline will follow some of the events as the show, but in no way will it be exact, as the player will have the freedom to play it out as they like.

TY wikia :)

Its play style and environment will play out much like Star Trek, with players taking the responsibilities of chief engineer, science offer, navigation/helmsman etc. on the bridge, there are about 20 key characters in the story. Lastly the game will roll into a Robotech game as it progresses.

In many ways. ... I hate to say it, but its a lot like Star Trek, but a different setting and fantasy - were Mars has a snow cap, and Pluto has life (as per the show).

Any question feel free to rmail me or reply to this thread. So far I have about 3 takers, looking for more interest.

Re: (IC) Star Blazers: Space Battleship Yamato

I'm interested.

Every time I get a new SF rpg, the first thing I try to do with it is stat up the Argo and its crew.  Some systems are less bad at this than others.  The best results I've had were with Spirit of the Century (Fate Core's precursor), modeling the ships as if they were characters; complete with stunts et al.  I haven't tried Mindjammer, but if it's based on Fate, then it should work quite well.

There is also Starblazer Adventures (based on a British comic book, and having nothing to do with the anime) which is also a Fate variant.  You might want to look into Bulldogs and Diaspora (both Fate variants) as well.
