IC blackbox system, homebrew setting

I am looking for a number of players to explore my world, maybe affect it's history.

I will be using a system behind the scenes, mostly cause I am trying a new system and I keep losing players before even starting play, so this is my solution. Besides I'm as excited about the world too.

The Gameplay
The game will be sandbox, and stories will be mostly player driven. I create the world, you can explore, or even change it.

I can accept several players, possibly broken into groups if there are enough. So far, of the games I've played in, small groups always die, with literally only a single exception (and it almost died until we got some new blood) hence the desire for more players to keep things active.

Also, I will not set out to kill players, but neither will I avoid it. There are dangerous things in the world and it is entirely possible to encounter something outside you ability to deal with. Should this happen, there will always be some way of escape, but if you charge a dragon with a dagger there will be a good chance of you dying, of course you might get lucky and win too, also a possibility, if a remote one.

The Setting
The setting is science fantasy, with magic that is used to make technology, though not direct counterparts to real world tech, more like an alternative tech evolution based on a world of magic.

The world has a set of physics, altered from real life. The magic is used according to these physics. For example, gravity has three "poles" which interact differently, so making something float would be done either by applying force, or by changing it's gravity pole. Many substances change pole naturally based on heat. This affects how the sun works even, with the sun going through a cycle of expansion into darkness and contraction to light up. Now gravity poles are not like magnets, gravity is still omnidirectional. The different poles really just change how matter acts in regards to gravity, for example, one pole doesn't pull on matter of other poles. (green gravity pulls normally on green but doesn't affect the other two. Red pulls on red, but pushes blue. Blue is neutral to itself, but pushes on red.)

The particular location this game takes place, is on the inside of a dyson sphere built to be about 2AU in diameter (about the size of the orbit of mars). Few even suspect the nature of this, but most cultures have rumors, or actual historical knowledge, that they came from other worlds and that this world, for some reason doesn't have stars or a moon. They thus know something brought them here, but have no idea who, what, or why.

There is an empire that went through a civil war. A huge area got destroyed in apocalyptic style. Now the remains of the empire is trying to rebuild and recover. Much knowledge was lost and now expeditions venture into the devastation to recover what they can. Other member nations that avoided the war are now vying for power and control. The world being so big, there is also a lot of unexplored places.

The world also has many quirks. Horses didn't come along until recently with humans, and still are not the most common work animal. Instead dogs, bred from wolves that were here earlier, are the primary work animals. Pedal powered tricycles and bicycles are the common form of individual transport, with horses being uncommon and primarily kept by the wealthier folk.

Magic allows knowledgeable folks to produce more advanced materials as well as to manipulate materials. For example, stonemasons shape stone using magic, often into single pieces, and more capable stonemasons can actually change the material of rock into other forms of rock, a few masters can even make gem stones.

Re: IC blackbox system, homebrew setting

Looks cool. What sort of character does a player play as?

Re: IC blackbox system, homebrew setting

The world has humans (and human varieties including dwarves, elves, and halflings) but also several of may own races including Reaplings (living constructs of sorts), Zyphers (magical tigers with horns and wings, quadrupeds, no arms), and Fealin (humanoids similar to Zyphers but with other abilities. An evil wizard was involved here).

The city where everyone will be starting has an unusual political structure, as it is one of the few remaining cities of the CFC, a founding nation of the empire, but many of the smaller nations are more traditional, so you could be a noble depending on where you're from (I'd require an optional roll to be anything more than a lower rung noble though, however it would come with risk, the roll might result in you being merely of genteel birth with nothing else of the nobility)

You will roll for wealth, otherwise, you're basically free to choose character as you wish.

Feel free to ask about other other options. I'll include creative ideas and concepts if they can fit the world.

Re: IC blackbox system, homebrew setting

Sounds interesting. What sort of government does the starting city have. What makes it so unusual?

Re: IC blackbox system, homebrew setting

How would characters be defined?  Just adjectives or is there some understood terminology?

Re: IC blackbox system, homebrew setting

The New World Empire is like a collection of nations. The Empire has a central military, standard currency, trade language, etc.

The starting city is in the Confederacy of Free Clans (CFC). Each clan has a chief, and the chiefs are selected in a variety of ways, often direct election or tests of merit. (The CFC was actually the model for the structure of the Empire.) Clans are limited in size and money is made by the clan to be divided among the members of the clan. The clans have social ranks, each of which must be earned.

The clans are a warrior society (not really warmongers though), and the social order is very structured.

The chiefs of al the clans in an area wil group together about 60 to a group, each group picks a representative and the representatives meet into groups, repeating until a group smaller than 60 represents the entire CFC. This highest group is the Council, which makes decisions for the entire CFC and acts as the highest court. Each level below however, can freely make laws and such for the region represented. The council selects individuals to become Arbiters, who act as judges and mediators. The Arbiters hold loyalty to no clan, but to the code of Zubean, which is to the CFC what the constitution is to the USA.

The CFC also has the Librarians and the Healers, which are also groups that are outside individual clans. Each of these three serve all clans equally, but are also unofficially considered authority figures.

(I'll answer the next question after dinner)

At this point wouldn't it be a good idea to go ahead and make the game and ad already?

Re: IC blackbox system, homebrew setting

Well, four interests sounds better than most of my games, so sure.

Characters will be worked on together, mostly through description and discussion. The mechanics will be invisible to players. This actually will let me try different things to see how they work out without interfering with gameplay.

I'll make the game and link soon.

Plenty of space for more players.

Re: IC blackbox system, homebrew setting

Here is the game, though I don't have all the bg info up yet, I got enough for people to start asking questions and building characters.
