Gauging interest

Been away for a year (or few), got a few games in mind but no time to run them all, so want to gauge interest here and see which ones would get a group and which I'll hold back for now. 18+ only due to language and potential themes, and fairly quick progress in game (I check every day and post nearly every time I log in).

College Football (freeform) - Be a student athlete and balance (or imbalance) the practice/study/social triangle to tell your story. Will you be the next big draft pick, start networking for the future, or just have a damn good time!
4-6 players, player led storytelling.

Wheel of Time (WoT d20) - Explore the world of the epic book series. Set a year or two before the books, the world is stable with no idea of the tumultuous chaos that is ready to explode. Story arc should take us all the way to Tarmon Gai'don with some encounters with main book characters - and who knows, even a way to influence events and change the entire story.
3-8 players, possibility of multiple groups, DM led storytelling.

Firefly (FireflyRPG/SerenityRPG) - Get a ship, find a crew, keep flyin'. The rules of the verse are simple, but the lives we poor souls that live in it are seldom so. Have an idea of the story that runs in the background and lists of jobs written to pick and choose from - only some of which give insights into the greater plot. Will you watch events unfold from afar, or be the ones involved deep in the action.
DM led plot with mission choices, 3-5 players, multiple groups possible.

Shadowrun (SR4/SR5) - Ho there chummers! Got a milk run or two for ya, if you got the stones... In this ever changing world where magic meats machine, and people are changed by both, nothing is as certain as danger and credits (either owed, earned, or stolen). Make your path through life in the shadows and see what you can grab before they grab you. Oh, and never EVER deal with a dragon.
Up to 12 players forming a couple of permanent teams or coming together for just a run or two, GM led storytelling.

These are the games I have in mind to run, each needs a bit of prep work, and all four I have successfully ran IRL and online before (mainly here on RPoL). So is there any interest in one or more of these?

Re: Gauging interest

I have yet to play in a Serenity/ Firefly game that actually gets off the ground here on RPoL.  I refuse to believe it can't be done, so count me interested there.  Sounds like you have a better shot than most (that I've been in), considering you've given thought to both jobs and overarching plot. :)

Re: Gauging interest

Anything SR4 has my time and energy. I'd be keen if that gets off the ground. SR4 is another system that seldom gets past the start.

Re: Gauging interest

I'd be interested in the Firefly/Serenity game.  I've tried a couple before that fizzled, mostly I think due to lack of direction.  A long term plot of some kind is always a must in my book.

Re: Gauging interest

I would be interested in the WoT game once I am over my cold. Also you would have to make a small allowance for someone having to learn the system lol.

The last two I tried to join... did not work.

WoT or Shadowrun I'd be very interested in if they can get going.

Re: Gauging interest

I think (gauging by primary interest here) that I can drop the Football game until a later time. So that leaves three games which hold interest. I know SR4 and Firefly are games with many players and few games here on RPoL, so those getting interest is no surprise.

I'll start writing notes and bullet points for WoT, SR, and Firefly, hopefully having at least one of those games going sooner rather than later. I have a holiday planned for February, but I have a couple of days where I know I'll be chilling in a hotel room and so that shouldn't disrupt anything.

So for now the systems are the d20 Wheel of Time Roleplaying Game, ShadowRun 4th Edition, and the Cortex Serenity RPG. I'd be able to help people learn them or the backgrounds for each world, but there is a lot of information on the internet for free which'll help bring you up to speed. I need to read through SR5 and the newer FireflyRPG on the Cortex system to see if they would work or provide any cool fluff or background, but might stick to what I know for now.

Knowledge of the world/background is far better than experience of the system imo. Most die rolls you'd be asked to make would be along the lines of 'Roll 1d20 and add 3.' rather than a 'Roll a will check. I prefer players to concentrate on their actions and the story than figuring out the mechanics behind it all. Many great stories are told when players realise a character sheet only tells them what they are good or bad at, and stop thinking it says what they can and can't do.

Anyway, thanks for the quick feedback and I'll leave this thread up for more interest, questions, and feedback so I can plan out the games better.

I'd be interested in 5th edition SR if you decide you want to give it a shot.

Re: Gauging interest

Either Shadowrun system would interest me. Would it be standard Seattle, and how tight do you see chargen options being?

Re: Gauging interest

@Merevel: I'd recommend them - they are a little different to the others (obvious reasons for that) but it wraps up the story well for me and put a big smile on my face. Basically in any game that has a predetermined setting, I like players that know about the world (magic levels, tech levels, feel, counties, landscape, races, etc) - with all but 3 books, you should be well up to speed.

@Shaman: I know there are not a huge amount of changes between sr4 and sr5, just need to figure out which ones will affect gameplay (specifically how magic and matrix work... they used to be tricky unless you had cheat sheets galore at times), and also how good chargen is. Speaking of which...

@Novocrane: I'd like a new runner feel to the groups tbh, starting small and growing tall. I'd limit it to a few core books, though anything unrealistic or too powerful would probably be vetoed. And yes, Seattle is the starting point for the campaign, keep it easy for the newer folk to get their feet wet. Who knows where you may end up however, depending on what choices are made.

Re: Gauging interest

Firefly.
Though I'd put out there to do something rules-light. I'm in one game that is set using the serenity rules system, and to me it is a bit cumbersome for online play. Savage Worlds or The Window would be my recommendation, as these lend themselves to pulpy action.

Re: Gauging interest

Well I am starting things off with the Firefly game. I've read through the newer published material and feel that whilst the system works well, it may be (as pointed out by wigglebiscuit) a little cumbersome. I'll be making a simplified homebrewed version of the system and rolls will be few and far between unless they players seek out trouble at every turn... always possible I guess!

So going to be writing threads and fleshing out a reduced ruleset for that game and we should be good to get started on some chargen for it this coming week. I'll post a link to the game when it's the system is designed and explained on there. So anyone interested in Firefly with light rules and the chance to tell one heck of a gorram story - watch this space!

----

I will probably be using the 4th edition ruleset of Shadowrun after checking through some of the SR5 stuff, simply because it's what I know and have the most books for. For those interested in running the shadows, feel free to post here about what you are looking for (pink mowhawk, etc) as once the Firefly game is underway I will be putting this one online.

----

And to WoT, this one will be the third to get started as it's the one I feel needs the less work by me to actually get up and running. So once I have the other two in the air, I'll be firing this up as well. As the storyline will predate the books by a few years there will be a few character types restricted or not allowed at game start (Aiel, Ogier, Asha'man, etc).

----

If you have questions about anything else I've not covered here, or would prefer to ask things of a more secretive nature regarding playing a certain character type... well hit me up on rMail!

Cheers,
Chris

Re: Gauging interest

Ok the Firefly game is up and requesting players: link to another game

Give me a week to get that running properly and I'll start looking at getting Shadowrun going... and then a week or two after that we'll crack on with Wheel of Time.
