IC: Strategy Games

I’ve been tossing around a couple of turn-based strategy games in my head lately, and wanted to see if either received enough interest to develop beyond a basic concept.  Both games would utilize the same home-brewed system.

The first concept is for 3-5 players to be developers – a combination of land, commercial, industry, real estate - that are building their fortunes in competition with one another in a fictional city and its surrounding communities.  The players would influence local politicians, chambers of commerce, raise private equity, and many more tactics to win the rights to revitalize a downtown district, build a housing community, convert a brownfield site into an industrial manufacturing plant, etc. in the name of profit and fame.

The second concept is for 3-5 players to be the heads of organized crime groups that are competing to control the vice industries in a fictional city – narcotics, prostitution, labor racketeering, etc. – through manipulation of the establishment, a well-timed hit, or any other number of underhanded tactics.  Ideally one of the players would play the role of law enforcement and have to utilize their assets to uncover intelligence about the other player-driven organizations and go after them.

I would love to hear thoughts on the viability and desirability of these concepts.

Re: IC: Strategy Games

Why not run both? With the developers being more like heads of a noble household (who would also develop things for extra cash) and the second concept unchanged. Giving some sort of bonus for catching and shutting down said gang, or a bonus to the criminals for gaining control of a noble household.

I'm sure it'd be pretty hard to run basically two games. But it could be very fulfilling, especially from a GM standpoint. As you could then run a normal RPG set in the city, you already have the political plots placed for you. As you have to do is sit back and let us go crazy lol.

I guess I just like big community type games like that.

Re: IC: Strategy Games

I would love to play something like a head of a noble family, or crime syndicates. Maybe even a small group of criminals/little known family, and we have to work our ways up?

Thanks for the feedback and interest.  I will work on fleshing out the system and background and launch the game in the next few days.
