Cyberpunk Lifepath Game

I'm going to run a black-box lifepath game, strong on immersion. What's this mean?

Black Box: There's a game system, but it's behind the scenes, and you won't have access to it. Just describe what you do, and the GM will determine what happens. How do you know what you're capable of? Same way you do in real life. Sometimes you over-estimate yourself, sometimes you under-estimate yourself.

Lifepath: The game takes the players from youth to adulthood as a prelude. This is both to create backstory, and a form of character creation. Who we are is a function of how we react to what we experience.

Immersive: As much as possible, what you know is what your character knows, and all information is parsed to you through the lens of your character's personality. Players will contribute to this atmosphere by only presenting the information the other PCs have access to; what their senses can tell them.

This should, ideally, add to the ambiguous trust issues that define the cyberpunk genre. You should never know, precisely, who you can trust. You should never know what other people are thinking or feeling, not with 100% certainty. Some of your fellow PCs may actually be NPCs. Some of them may be traitors. Trust sparingly. Watch your back.

Interested? Let me know. I'd prefer 3-5 players.

Re: Cyberpunk Lifepath Game

This sounds like a really promising idea! I'd definitely submit an RTJ if you decided to run with it.

Re: Cyberpunk Lifepath Game

You do, but the character creation is the choices you make as you grow up.

So it's not like, put 5 points in Strength and 3 in Intelligence, but do you want to spend your free time playing football with your friends or studying for the big exam?

Re: Cyberpunk Lifepath Game

Why am I involved in so many games!? The idea sounds wonderful (maybe a but heavy on the referee's side) and I'd love to try it out, but I can't participate...

This is a high concept, grab you by the throat, shake you like a rag doll idea for character gen.

Count me as a applicant.

Re: Cyberpunk Lifepath Game

I understand that black box hides our stats, but do we get any kind of reference at least? In real life I know whether I can do a backflip or not, even if I might over/under-estimate how well. I.E. I can do some stuff with computers, but I know I can't program in assembly (yet) and that while I do know C++, I don't know how to program a top of the line game or even how to use direct x. So is there a reference, even a vague one, of our character's skill in things?

Also, how consistent is it? By this I mean how much of a bell curve around our skill level? DnD is very poor in this area, one roll is worse than apprentice while the previous roll was better than a master, and the next roll could be anywhere on the spectrum with minimal regard to actual skill of the character. (Mostly it is good to know whether being successful means I am [the character is] actually good at something, or if it is equally likely to get a pathetic result the next go round.) Consistent games will have most results around one point with only a slim chance of performing above or below your general skill. Inconsistent games, and there is hardly any point to knowing a skill.

Feedback from your senses, self-estimation, and the results of your prior actions. Based, of course, on how good at self-assessment your character is, or if he or she is overconfident, prone to underestimating him or herself, or subject to the Dunning Kruger effect.

Depends on the task. The purpose of the black box system is to keep players focused on the story, making choices for reasons of characterization, rather than playing the char op metagame.

Treat it like your character would. Sometimes skills see massive breakthroughs of understanding or enlightenment, but usually it's a process of getting a little better so slowly you don't even notice in the day to day, and it's only obvious when you look back after, for example, a year of consistent practice.
