Interest in a wuxia game

Looking to run a game using Flying Swordsmen, a freely available fantasy martial arts RPG, using its default setting, and twisting the narrative to suit the protagonists. That means spectacular swordplay, high-flying martial arts, and above all melodrama, all in your favourite jianghu colours.

Expect tropes to appear.

Anyone interested?

I'd be interested, but I don't know anything about the system. Would you be willing to walk newbies through it?

Re: Interest in a wuxia game

I might be. It depends how the system treats alignments (haven't read that far yet).

Re: Interest in a wuxia game

There are several aspects of "alignment" a xia will have to follow. This is known as the Xia code.

* Benevolence: The Xia strives to help others whenever possible.
* Loyalty: The Xia strives to honor his commitments to his sworn companions first, his family second, and his liege lord third.
* Bravery: The Xia strives to maintain face when in danger. They do not shy awayfrom using force if it is necessary to reach a goal.
* Righteousness: The Xia strives to dowhat is right at all times.
* Individuality: The Xia strives to maintain a sense of self-worth in a society that values conformity.

Some profiles might add a twist to this, like the Demonist. Many xia have horrible character faults, but still adhere to the Code most of the time.

The system will be instantly familiar to anyone with passing knowledge of (A)D&D or OSR games in general. The only major difference is the addition of a stunt die instead of a straight bonus due to a high attribute. XP, hitpoints, attack, damage, ac (increasing from 10), damage, ability checks and saves are all mostly unchanged.

Re: Interest in a wuxia game

How intent are you running this with d20 / Flying Swordsmen, as compared to say Legends of the Wulin or Qin: Warring States?

Re: Interest in a wuxia game

I got Legends of the Wulin a few months ago, but I've never run or played a game of it. Played a total of one session using Qin.

Flying Swordsmen is based on (A)D&D, and since I've been DMing AD&D for 20ish years, I feel comfortable with it.

However, if y'all want me to give a shot using Qin or Wulin rules, I could try. I might need some help from someone versed in those systems, though.

I vote for Qin and can provide some insight in the system if needed.

Re: Interest in a wuxia game

How about we try a short game using Flying Swordsmen, with pre-generated characters?

It will start with a barroom brawl and escalate from there, just to see whether this concept floats (i.e. have enough interested players to endure the 10-20 posts this scene could last).

If there are enough people interested, I could then switch to Qin or Legends of Wulin for the game proper.

Thoughts? Interest?

Re: Interest in a wuxia game

I'm interested as well. But, I am also only familiar with d20. If you run it with the other systems are they available for free?

Re: Interest in a wuxia game

I tried to run a game of Qin some time ago, but due to schedule problems, it didn't take off. I have the character creation rules and such stashed away for easy access here on RPoL, so all I need to do is to hand them over to the GM and we've got enough rules for even those without the books to create a character - if people wish to try Qin for a system, that is. I find it pretty nice, if you ask me.

Re: Interest in a wuxia game

Hey, Morty.

Thanks for the link. I wasn't aware there was such a thing. It looks like it was inspired by/based on Chris Pramas' Dragon Fist (released for free by Wizards of the Coast way back in 1999), a wuxia/martial arts-inspired game. From the previous posts, I thought this was d20-based but I was pleasantly surprised to see that it was based on AD&D instead.

Looks like a fun system. If this is still happening, I'm willing to give it a try. Let's play some Flying Swordsmen :)

Re: Interest in a wuxia game

Ho ho, I didn't think there would be someone to recognize the long lost roots of  Flying Swordsmen.  Its author talks more about that connection on his blog. Brainfart. I did read more than a few posts on this, however can't recall where.

Expect the game link here shortly.

Re: Interest in a wuxia game

Everyone interested can find the game here. The game is rated Mature, and is still very much a work in progress. I'll try and tailor it to my players' expectations.
