Birthright-style in Faerun?

What area of Faerun would be best for a birthright-style game?  I don't know Faerun all that well, so any advice is good advice.  TIA.

Thay would be amazing, depending upon the power-level.  It's already inrigue-filled: so politics run the gamut anyway.

The Sword-Coast is well-enough known by many people (Those who played Baldur's Gate, anyone who has read the Drizzt books, and so forth) that it may be easy to create a "point" in a timeline and then add some inter-monarchy warfare.

In reply to Arkyn (msg # 1):

Are you planning on using / acknowledging Blooded Characters or just using a Birthright-like Domain management system?

I would suggest Tethyr as it is a fractured Kingdom where individual Noble Houses rise, fall and rule areas outside of the purview of the Monarchy.  Assuming you play in pre 4E Faerun.

Re: Birthright-style in Faerun?

You can also use the border kingdoms as well, information on them is avaliable on the archives of WOTC,

In reply to Shiv (msg # 3):

I've always loved the birthright 'blood' facet, but not necessarily going to use that.  Regardless, Birthright as a PC and a GM is on my short list.  Just never had any luck with it as a team/group game, though it seems it could lend itself really well...

In reply to Arkyn (msg # 5):

If you are familiar with the Baldur's Gate video game saga you could conceivably have a bunch of Bhaalspawn in place of blooded heroes.  That might be an interesting twist.

Re: Birthright-style in Faerun?

With apologies to Forgotten Realms grognards / scholars.  I know I'm being very general, but if the OP is interested he can look into it more closely.

In a nutshell:

There was something called "The Time of Troubles" (which was how TSR explained "out of game" rule changes "in game" when they went from 1st to 2nd edition).  The gods were sent to the material plane by Ao to learn humility in mortal shells.

One of the gods, Bhaal the god of murder, foresaw his own demise and "spread his seed" far and wide.  After his death his progeny grew up and slowly learned that they carried a piece of his divine power.  Whenever they killed a sibling they gained some power (very Highlander-ish).  The video games followed the protagonist (a Bhaalspawn) as he dealt with being a semi-divine being who got to chose his own destiny (for good or evil).

This all took place around the City of Baldur's Gate and later on in Amn and beyond, though it did leave things open that there are many more Bhallspawn wandering around.

You could use Bhaalspawn in place of Blooded characters in Tethyr (or wherever) as de facto Regents and stay close to the "divine right" aspect.  Heck you could have other gods that had the same idea as Bhall and also have other Bloodlines (Mystra, Mrykul, Bane, etc...)

Re: Birthright-style in Faerun?

That's pretty sharp...

And I appreciate the synopsis as I didn't move to faerun until late 3.5, almost 4, as I preferred Greyhawk.

In reply to Arkyn (msg # 9):

No problem.

Even if you don't use the Bhaalspawn angle Tethyr is still a good place for a Birthright style game.  There's plenty of chaos, petty politics and a splintered monarchy / nobility as well as lots of space to expand.
