IC: Homebrew setting, "Noblu Zubaen"

Here is an expansive world where scifi and fantasy meet.

The sun expands and goes dark, only to reform and burn brightly again in it's own cycle, in the sky lies two celestial bodies yet never a star to be seen. For this world is the inside of a Dyson sphere (unknown to the inhabitants of course).

In this world is both science and magic, and filled with different peoples, both familiar to players and new ones of my own design. There are great empires and tiny kingdoms, ruins and dungeons, merchants and monsters.

For this I will use my own system. It is fairly simple and any experience with d20 will mostly translate.

I want to run players in my world, but with so much here, I figure I can run multiple groups, each with their own focus, whether it be dungeon delving or kingdom building.

If you want to explore, fight, or trade in my world post here and if people want to play I've got the space for sandbox, and the stories for more structured play.

I've actually had an idea very similar to this one before, though sans the magic.

I think I'd like to play in this. I like a bit of structure, personally.

What kinds of different races/people did you have in mind? How would magic and stuff work?

Re: IC: Homebrew setting, "Noblu Zubaen"

The system developed from a desire to have a classless system, so I combined D20 and Savage worlds. Most abilities are skills, though some skills require certain feats to use. This includes combat and powers. There is a fatigue score and using certain abilities including spellcasting consumes this fatigue.

I use a lot of soft caps rather than hard limits, so you can often push your character, though it is risky to do so.

As for races, most of the common races are found, though none are predominantly abundant, so humans, elves, dwarves, etc can be found. I also have three races of my own making, Reaplings (an artificial race of necromantic life, that come in a number of forms), Zyphers (a mono-gender tiger-like race with lots of magic that can be expressed differently between individuals), and the Fealin (a small race of humanoids that can spin silk like a spider).

The world has backstory for why there are so many races, and there is plenty of room for more of them.

Re: IC: Homebrew setting, "Noblu Zubaen"

I like the grandness of the scale you propose.  My immediate thought was "running multiple groups in something like this is going to be a lot of work for the person in charge."

But I guess that's a problem that falls more heavily on your shoulders than anyone else's. :)

Re: IC: Homebrew setting, "Noblu Zubaen"

I tend to be more spontaneous. Never needed to do prep work to run a game, thus it isn't a big deal for me. Even ran an entire campaign with zero prep and no plan nor story to start and it was a random encounter in that game (where I had forgotten my beastiary) that to the creation of the reaplings, whose heritage drove the developing story.

Generally I just need to remember what happened thus far so I don't contradict the past, though in this case I do have a few old adventures I plan on converting and using.

I plan on writing some stories in this world and there is nothing loke playing to flesh out history and points of interest.

Re: IC: Homebrew setting, "Noblu Zubaen"

So I have two potentially willing to play, I think a third if SWolfe was demonstrating interest and not just commenting, plus I have one, maybe two on another site for a game that at least takes place in the same world, though I might move them over here to consolidate and allow combined OOC (which helps keeps games alive) if they are willing anyway.

If that happens, I'll have 3-5 people together and so will start the game.

Re: IC: Homebrew setting, "Noblu Zubaen"

Sounds good, that makes three with solid interest plus a few potentials.

I'll make the game on Tuesday (will be quite busy till then)

I will not have a maximum number of players, unless a miracle happens and I get a huge number (like a couple dozen in several groups) regular posters, or however many starts to strain my abilities.
