Superheroes, Cyberpunks, or Paranormal Investigators (oh my)

I'm going to run a black-box (hidden system) roleplaying focused game, a variation on one of three themes. If one or more of these options appeals to you, let your interest be known, and I'll give you slight preference when it comes to choosing players.

Downsizing: A game set in the near future, cyberpunkish. Players are corporate hot-shots destined for a fall. Gameplay will consist of crawling back up from the gutter, and the choice to try and recapture your old life, begin a new one on the other side of the law, or single-mindedly pursue revenge. Less "80s-cyberpunk" and more "modern futurism".

Volunteers: A superhero game set in the modern day. Players are among the settings first superhumans, but they have a lot of company. More postmodern than gritty, definitely not four-colored, with an examination of the transformative psychology and sociology of transhumanism.

Paranormal.com Players are writers, crew, and performers of a paranormal investigation web series. They travel the country investigating unnatural phenomena and reporting on it for their loyal viewers. Better shows means better ratings... but are they prepared to deal with what they find when things get real?

I would certainly be interested, specifically in Volunteers. Interesting title for the game! Can we get any more details or are you keeping it vague?

Re: Superheroes, Cyberpunks, or Paranormal Investigators (oh my)

The hook/set-up is that the players are volunteers for a scientific study of some sort, and largely ignorant of any differences between this setting and the real world. That ties in to what brings you together as a group in-game.

Powers in Volunteers will either be chosen by you or assigned by me, depending on your preferences; if player-chosen, you'll be able to tell me what you want in a general sense, and then discover them as they grow and you learn how to control them in-game.

I would be interested to join as well :)

all three setting sounds intriguing and I like your black box approach (allows me to ignore if its GURPs :P)

My preference in order are:

  1. Volunteers
  2. Downsizing
  3. Paranormal.com

Re: Superheroes, Cyberpunks, or Paranormal Investigators (oh my)

Combining the 3 could be interesting to - though I lean toward paranormal myself (being a known vampire fan and all, this fits) but the hero one intrigues me as well.
Not sure if I am up to playing now though, going through some stress related burn out at the moment.

Beyond that, volunteers: Super strength and speed via telekinetic field that surrounds the individual (potentially could use the field in a normal telekinetic way, or even develop other 'energy' type tk abilities, examples are Pyrokinesis (human torch like), Cryokinesis (Ice Man type), Electrokinesis (Electro from Spiderman) as well as many other variants all based on the mental power development of the character.

(This is about the limit of my creativity at this time, feel free to use it if any of you want to).

Re: Superheroes, Cyberpunks, or Paranormal Investigators (oh my)

Like most of the others (all of the others?) the volunteers setting sound like the most intriguing to me. That said, I am curious about the hidden system aspect of it. A game system does impact play to an extent, since it is does essentially cover the physics of a game world an what is and is not possible. So, it would be nice to know the system being used, even if we do not see any of the actual game mechanics, character sheets, etc.

Treat it more or less like you would the real world, and you should be fine.
