Re: IC Star Wars Padawan Stories

The obvious race limitation would be to force sensitive races, which still gives a very wide range of Star Wars races to choose from. Light sabre styles/colours would also be limited to what would be available to/taught to a Padawan, so in all likelihood limited to blue, green and maybe yellow. Initially all Jedi Knights and Masters will be played by myself or another GM. I haven't pinned down an exact starting age group yet, but probably around 12-16. Be aware that this is will in all likelihood will not be an adult game - sex, love and the like will get a Padawan shunted out of the order faster than you can say 'Hayden Christensen'. This isn't to say romance will be forbidden from the RP as a rule, but be aware that under no circumstances will I be switching this game to adult - so no overt sexual scenes.

Re: IC Star Wars Padawan Stories

I like the story idea.  It's something that I would like to experience.

I dislike the freeform version though.  I'd rather have something with a bit more structure to it.  Star Wars Saga Edition with some rule adjustments could be fantastic for this idea.  Just my personal preference.

Re: IC Star Wars Padawan Stories

Unless I can find a Co-GM experienced in Star Wars RPG systems the game will be run free-form. This isn't due to a dislike of structured games but more due to my lack of familiarity or experience with Star Wars RPGs and being relatively green to GM'ing in general.

Thanks for the offer, I might take you up on that once I get things sorted.

Re: IC Star Wars Padawan Stories

With the recent release of the Star Wars: Force and Destiny beta, have you looked at learning the FFG Star wars system? I consider it in many was a reversion to WEG's version, but refined with time.

My interest in Jedi since the original trilogy has been tarnished over the years, but this has certainly caught my attention.

Re: IC Star Wars Padawan Stories

Ok I'm interested. Also on top of the tournament I would like to have 2 major events covered. 1 the retrieving of the light saber crystal and building a lightsaber. 2 the trial tof advance to padawan which I remember reading about somewhere.

I've never done freeform, but this sounds like it could be fairly awesome.

Re: IC Star Wars Padawan Stories

I would be interested in said game, but not if it's freeform.  I would need some kind of structure associated with it.  I'm very familiar with Star Wars Saga Edition, but would be willing to try something new like the West End Games version that has recently been released to beta.  The structure is a bit of a deal-breaker for me, though.

Re: IC Star Wars Padawan Stories

So for a lot of you the free-form structure would be a deal-breaker I'm hearing? Like I've said before I'm only doing it free-form due to my lack of experience with Star Wars RPGs, but I've started to look at the Saga Edition rules to see how easy they are to learn. Right now I'm still planning on running the game free-form but if there's anyone with experience in Star Wars GM'ing who wants to Co-GM I'll certainly consider running this under one of the more structured systems.

I am experieced with the new Fantasy Flight systems, and have the Force and Destiny beta. I would be willing to help out with mechanics, as long as I'm not coming up with plot.

Re: IC Star Wars Padawan Stories

I've run a number of Saga Edition games, so I'd be alright with helping you out there until you think you've got a handle on the system.  I'd still want to play, so I might also be useful as a bit of a guinea pig that you can experiment with.  You wouldn't have to be hesitant about killing my character; I'm fairly quick at coming up with new ones.  It's nice to know just how far you can push, and the line is admittedly a little odd-seeming in Saga Edition.  Players have tons of HP and ways to avoid damage, but healing is very slow, expensive, and hard to execute properly.

It's your game though, so it's more up to you exactly what you're after from your Co-GM and how you want to interact with them.

Re: IC Star Wars Padawan Stories

Using Saga Edition as the system would be a deal-breaker for me. I'm not a fan of d20-based systems in play-by-post. Too many failed game experience due to the system.

Id say, that probably any system anyone throws in here would be a dealbreaker for someone. Personally I love freeform games and if youre running it as such, Id be happy to hop on.

Just go with whatever system (or non-system) you feel most comfortable with.

In reply to Uebelator (msg # 17):

Exactly, on both the "dealbreaker" and the fact that many prefer freeform.

If you wanted to shoulder the lion's share of the work, you could run the game "behind the curtain" - pick a system that you know and like, just don't tell anyone what system it is.  You do all the rolls, you keep the stats - and the players play their characters.

Depending on the complexity of the system (and your slavish adherence to it, ahem) it's easier and smoother than it might sound.

Absolutely this. The best thing you can do is to run a system you feel comfortable with.

Re: IC Star Wars Padawan Stories

Those who prefer freeform who havnt tried the FFG Star Wars system, I encourage you to check it out. It not only allows but actively instigates the random "Well crap, I didnt mean THAT to happen" moments that Star wars is known for, with a large amount of narraie power in the hands of the players (barring GM veto or modification).

As I said, I'm willing to handle the backend for th GM, if he wants, as long as I dont have to come up with plot. That offer goes for freeform players who would REALLY rather not know their own stats, too.

Yes, the FFG Star Wars is indeed pretty nice.
Only Space-Combat seems pretty broken to me.

In reply to Uebelator (msg # 21):

Space combat takes some getting used to, and I dont particularly like how they increment ship speed (speed 5 and 6 are identicl except for dogfighting), but "patching" it for "real" movement and 1/2/4/8/16 range bands makes it quite playable.

Re: IC Star Wars Padawan Stories

Right, I just have to finalise some story elements and then I'll be contacting someone about Co-GM'ing. Still open to suggestions but at this stage I'll likely be sticking with freeform, and maybe if there's a Co-GM with SWRPG experience we'll use the SWRPG for combat.

Things are coming together but it will be a while yet before we're ready to play. W0LF0S will be Co-GM'ing with me but thank you for everyone else who offered.
