Re: Pathfinder Gritty Low Magic Swashbuckling

Most times anything pathfinder piques my interest but not this. You've hit all the things that turn me away from a game.

PC's expected to die: check
wound point / vitality point rules: check
low magic: check

I think a lot of people play pathfinder for the high fantasy. I expect you'll find many that know the system are like me and are turned off. I have to admit, my first thought was to suggest a system that works better for the type of game you seem to want. If you really want pathfinder, then good luck.

Re: Pathfinder Gritty Low Magic Swashbuckling

I'm kinda leery about this as well. Low magic I can deal with. Honestly, it's something I kinda prefer.

I don't know what this WP/VP variant is, though. Never heard of it.

However, my biggest turn off is pretty much when a campaign seems like a PC kill fest. I just don't understand why people think that's fun. Don't get me wrong, I'm all down for when PCs die, they stay dead. I have no qualms with that. Combat should be dramatic and harrowing, but it shouldn't be so overwhelming that all hope is lost.

Just my two cents.

In reply to st_nougat (msg # 1):

I'm fine with everything but the 'gritty.' That seems to clash with the swashbuckling nature of things. Swashbuckling brings to mind the Three Musketeers, Pirates of the Caribbean and Errol Flynn movies, which were not known for 'grittiness' and main character death.

Re: Pathfinder Gritty Low Magic Swashbuckling

I'd also be down for everything but your definition of gritty. PC death is something that should always be possible. It gets frustrating when it is something that is expected, though. I've always felt the key to being a great GM was finding that perfect balance where things are always challenging but infrequently lethal when players aren't doing stupid things.

I think this idea while neat clashes with itself but that has been noted elsewhere.

Re: Pathfinder Gritty Low Magic Swashbuckling

I think I'd be interested in this, most definitely.  I've really been in the mind for a low-magic style game.  But, as others have pointed out, the "players can/will die" thing can be a bit of a turn-off.  I guess it depends on how you'll be handling that -- i.e. is this going to be a very difficult game that will see PCs getting slaughtered; or is this a game where you plan on character death being a possible reality depending on how the die rolls (i.e., minimal fudging on your part to keep PCs alive).

I like the idea and would go for it with Savage Worlds, but I've no interest in learning Pathfinder.

so i guess this means you're not interested elecgraystone.  Thanks

link to another game

I went ahead and created a game for this.

As far as everyones complaints about the "Characters will die"

Is the gm trying to kill you? no.  Can it happen? yes.  Is there magic to bring someone back? nope.  if you die the character is dead, is the Gm trying to kill you? no.

I am looking for high adventure, risk and reward, and hopefully some humor and laughs with this game.

This game is rated adult
