Middle Earth game

Lately I've been missing a sword and sorcery type of game, and was thinking about possibly running a game set in middle earth.  I have the books for MERPS, and passing knowledge of rolemaster.  I also have the newer books for the Movie based rpg.  Wondered what kind of interest there would be in a game like this, possibly set earlier in the third age, and what system would be preferred.

In reply to gladiusdei (msg # 1):

Re: Middle Earth game

I've had The One Ring recommended to me.  I'm not sure if I have the money right now to buy several new rpg books or pdfs, in order to run it though.

Re: Middle Earth game

I am a huge Rolemaster fan from eons ago, and would play almost anything in that system.

My personal preferences aside, I have to agree with Jhaelan that character creation takes a while when in person, and even longer online.  And if you describe your knowledge as only "passing" -- you might find it tough to run.  I can't compare it to MERPS because I have never played that system.

But please don't let me talk you out of using Rolemaster.  Because I'd kinda like to play.  :)

Re: Middle Earth game

well I played all three version of Middle Earth: the rolemaster one, Decipher version and the last one TOR.

In my opinion the last version is the closest to get the feel of the books. As for MERP as far as I recall its a rolemaster lite version a lot simpler.

In the end it matters more what kind of game you want to play what is the theme and stories you want to convey.

Re: Middle Earth game

I'm not sure you could do Rolemaster unless each and every Player had access to the books. So many skills, diff prices for each Class, such complex chargen and advancement accounting.  And let's not even talk about the spell lists.

Merp is, indeed, RM-Lite - better, but still challenging.

And PbP, with either one the GM would have to carry a LOT of the combat - lots of work. If you're up for it, np, but don't underestimate what you're signing up for if you go there.

I know both RM and MERP, and would love to play - but I no longer have access to the books, and even with my experience I am leery of even trying chargen without.

GL!

Re: Middle Earth game

I was considering an earlier time frame, like the last days of Arthedain.  I can take a look at TOR and see how it works.  Not sure if I'd need all of the books to run it or not.

Re: Middle Earth game

Well,

TOR is very setting specific in both location and time frame :) I guess you can adapt it but it would take some work.

I think the Decipher version of the game was the most oriented to different time frames but I think you can do so with the MERP version which is not that bad (although it does take a lot to count for).

Re: Middle Earth game

Count me in as being very interested, in whichever system or timeline you plan to use!

Iron Crown Enterprises's 'Middle-earth Role Playing' or 'Lord of the Rings Adventure Game'.
Decipher's 'The Lord of the Rings Roleplaying Game'.
Cubicle 7's 'The One Ring'.

Re: Middle Earth game

after looking over the books for The One Ring RPG, I don't think I'd have a very hard time adapting it to sometime in the late second millennia of the third age.  The game would focus on adventurers in the ruined kingdoms of Arnor, dealing with the forces of Angmar and the growing shadow in the north.  Would there be interest in a game like that?

Would Players need to be familiar w/ the system, and/or have access to (the core of) those books?

Re: Middle Earth game

well, I'd say you'd probably need access to the adventurer's guide.  I could try talking you through character generation, but it would be hard to know what options are available for you.  Unless I cut and pasted entire pages of the books on here, which I am not really going to do.

Re: Middle Earth game

There is an online character generator that is very nice (for the Wilderland of course, but probably easily to use a base even if you decide to play elsewhere), with explanations of the various abilities etc. (hover over the ? marks):

(I would be happy to apply for your game and joining the Free Peoples)

it may be a few days before I get the game set up and running.  But I think there will be room for those interested.

Re: Middle Earth game

I have started the game.  I will be posting more details in the next day or two, but I figured there is enough up for initial character applications.
