New World of Darkness - what do people want to play

Hi there,

I am looking to storytell one of the following games in the NWOD set:

Mummy
Vampire
Mage
Geist
Changeling
Hunter
Promethean

...and I was wondering what people were interested in playing. If you could respond with either just one of these words, or a sentence or two talking about why you prefer that system, it would help me a lot!

I'm not even at the campaign-planning stage yet. Just fishing for what will get a lot of players. E.g. I would love to play some of these more than others, but don't want to plan a campaign only to find nobody joins since "nobody owns that game".

To further clarify: whichever I run, I'd be looking to run a 'single group of characters' from one setting. I know some people run each character separately (which I will do for the 'prelude' bit and some side-story, inevitably) but I want the main group together.

Re: New World of Darkness - what do people want to play

In order of preference:

Promethean. This is easily my #2 favorite nWoD race (#1 being Demon). There's so much potential for a rich, vibrant, moving story. I hate that it's completely anti-group, but it's perfect for individual sandbox play.

Mage. Seriously, how is it not fun bending and breaking the laws of reality? :D

Changeling. Really good system with a couple of races I can get behind. However, still screams of cliche fantasy.

Vampire. Meh. I like their powers, just hate political games. Would love to play in a non-political game.

Hunter. Again, meh. Very cliche. If there was a non-typical game, I'd be interested.

Mummy/Geist. Never played.

If you'd be willing to accept a newbie I'd be interested in Vampire.

Re: New World of Darkness - what do people want to play

Mummy - Never played, might pick it up depending on how strong the game concept is.

Vampire - As long as it's not a back-stabby PvP I'll be in, I know the rules quite well. I don't own Blood and Smoke, but I might pick it up depending...

Geist - I really wanna play this. Not much feeling the Core's latino gang feel, but I love the general fluff of what makes a Sin-Eater and the Jacob's Ladder style representation of the Underworld...

Changeling - This is my fave nWoD line outside of Demon:The Descent and I would love to get in a game of this :)

Promethean - Never played it, don't own it, but it seems interesting and if a cool concept comes up, I wouldn't mind scooping up the Core for it.

Re: New World of Darkness - what do people want to play

Okay, awesome, this is exactly the kind of feedback I was hoping for. Since 2/4 only mentioned Vampire, it sounds like that's the initial preference. But one vote against 'political' gaming, and one vote against 'PvP'.

Some politics are likely to come in (just because Covenants, and turf, and so on) but I was mostly thinking of a mystery sort of game anyway. Normal mix. Some fights. Some weird supernatural stuff. Friendships and betrayals (of NPCs I mean!) A central mystery that would be relevant to the crew.

Keep the votes / thoughts coming. All help is appreciated now. I'd love to get some 5-6 players together if possible, since one often loses 1-2 in the first little while due to general attrition problems.

I don't mind. I might make a 'simple guide to character creation' or walk you through manually. Trust me, stats are easy. NWoD is good at putting the most important stuff (setting, character, plot) ahead of the humdrum stuff (min-maxing, tedious item maximizing, etc.)

Re: New World of Darkness - what do people want to play

Okay, so we have

Promethean: one new to NWOD curious about this + one who doesn't own corebook but curious and willing + one very enthusiastic (3)
Vampire: two self-proclaimed newbies + one "if not PvP" + one "if not over-political" (4)

I might end up going with one setting, and one larger story, but two groups of characters...one promethean, one vampire. Prometheans somehow unified to some basic extent but fairly lonely stories; vampires connected 'formally' as a coterie. The two groups not opposed but inter-curious sort of thing.

Re: New World of Darkness - what do people want to play

Since I am still planning and plotting, and since there are only a few respondents, I'm not going to be posting an actual game thread for at least...oh, 3-4 days. Just so people know.

But if you're interested, please DO respond here. I don't mind if this becomes more of a discussion (as well as a place for people to 'vote' on systems), since the forum is for 'game proposals, input, and advice'.

Let's add to the discussion:

- what are feelings about ratings: normal, Mature, or Adult?
- how do people feel about inclusion of: drugs, prostitution (probably not explicit), violence, torture, etc. (Other controversial topics)
- any rules in Promethean or Vampire that people feel are broken or just annoying to keep in?
- should we stick to core books or allow powers / bloodlines / etc. from other source books?

I'd love to hear discussion from potential players.

Re: New World of Darkness - what do people want to play

@Nurgle's Rot; Neither of those things ring a bell and I only play nWoD, so I think you're safe.

==

I'm still interested btw, both for Promethean and Vampire.

I'm fine to play in Adult games, though I tend to err more to Mature when I play nowadays. I do get that nWoD games are dark by nature though so I'm fine to play Adult if it gets rated as such, though it'd be for the dark content for me, not to hook up.

Drugs and Prostitution do not offend me. Glorifying the R-word and torture does. It can happen off-screen, but I don't wanna know the terrible details of the events if needs be. General violence is fine as long as it doesn't get into sadistic detail. Common sense to what really needs to be shown against what doesnt here I guess.

I can't think of rules to be removed off the top of my head. I actually dislike homebrewing of established systems, so I'd rather we keep things as they are. I don't all the splatbooks for Vamp and I still need to pick up Promethean, so maybe some of the optional rules from later books could be made optional? I don't want to feel by buying Promethean someone's gonna make a more powerful character purely because they shelled out to get a supplement book with added rules in, y'know?

On that note then... Yeah, feel free to add the later stuff in, ala bloodlines, covenants etc (I don't think Promethean has too many adds itself). It does add more variety for characters, the above point I made was more for optional rules in these books rather than the additions of new character types.

YMMV on each point I make of course. Just sharing my own opinions.

Re: New World of Darkness - what do people want to play

I'd prefer if the game was mature. I don't mind inclusion of anything controversial as long as it doesn't offend the other players. I'm probably the least likely to get offended. I'm not familiar with Promethean so I don't know what rules are annoying there. For Vampire I think we should stick to the core five clans.

Re: New World of Darkness - what do people want to play

There honestly is a Bloodline I would want to grow my Vamp into for that game, though it won't be a member of it at chargen, I'd rather use xp and rping to get to be what the bloodline is. I'll talk more about that in the game forum when it gets made though. It does appear in the Corebook rather than a splat though.

Typically I omit the thing with Prometheans that negatively affect their surroundings and replace it with a penalty to social interactions with mortals.

Re: New World of Darkness - what do people want to play

The best way a Promethean game seems to work is one either being on the road and hitching across country, but also as a kind of solo game too. I think if a Promethean game was done, it'd have to have people having a thread each and the GM handles the NPCs they come across. More work, though the games become more personal and there is of course always the chance for cross-overs and brief encounters.

I can see them working in a sandbox if their Disquiet only affects the thread they are in... Representing a certain area of the city/town falling to the Disquiet until the Promethean moves along. I like the thought for example of an Ulgan hanging around a bar and slowly the mortals around them are being opened up to spiritual possession until they or the Ulgan moves...

Re: New World of Darkness - what do people want to play

Brief update.

1. I really like the feedback so far. Thanks for your discussion. I'll be posting in the next couple days, so stay tuned. It'll just be 'RTJ' and stuff, but yeah.

2. I'm going with mature, so I'll need age statements I believe. I'll request that later.

3. If you want to play Vampire, please do NOT play a Circle-of-the-Crone character. That's the only limitation. The city will be dominantly Lancea, with strong Invictus, and spatters of Dracul and Carthian.

You don't need age statements to run a mature game.

True, you don't need a statement, but getting players' ages will help in knowing the kind of tone and language you can use.

Re: New World of Darkness - what do people want to play

Here is a (very much early) thread for people:
link to another game

It provides deets for RTJ and the like. ALL ADVICE APPRECIATED at this point, although PM within the game thread is ideal for specific problems / criticisms. I don't want to look like a total chump. ;)

You'll notice that I request a simple, like Notepad sort of format, WoD sheet for vampires and prometheans if anyone knows of such a thing. I'm sure other NWOD games have them. I don't know where to look. That will be updated, and you will be credited, if/when such a thing is found.
