IC: Mechwarrior/Mercenaries Storytelling Game

I'm thinking of running a low-powered Mechwarrior (2e) campaign set in the pre-Clan Invasion Battletech universe, probably 3030s onwards. Focus would be heavily on roleplaying, attempting to recreate the gritty internecine flavour from the early novels (Grey Death, the Warrior trilogy, Wolves on the Border, etc) rather than the tabletop. Plenty of opportunities for betrayal, intra-unit politics, secrets, fickle Great Houses and bad press - as well as raids and toe-to-toe mech combat. I have some material prepared, just want to see if there was interest before I flesh it out further?

Re: IC: Mechwarrior/Mercenaries Storytelling Game

The last half dozen books I've read were the Grey Death Saga and Warrior trilogy.  Count me in if this gets off the ground.

Re: IC: Mechwarrior/Mercenaries Storytelling Game

Depends on the expected posting rate.. If it's not daily (I can manage 2-3 decent posts a week) then I'm all for it.

Re: IC: Mechwarrior/Mercenaries Storytelling Game

At the moment I'm anticipating posting frequency to be 2-3 times a week to advance the storyline and I'm happy to support a more frequent rate for flavour where wished

Thanks. That sounds manageable.  Assuming my RTJ is accepted of course.

Give me a week or so and I'll post to Wanted - Players. Sounds like there's three or four, which should make it feasible :)

Possibly interested, yes.  Do you plan to advance the timeline much during the game?

Re: IC: Mechwarrior/Mercenaries Storytelling Game

In reply to Finlos (msg # 7):

In fits and spurts. Given a mercenary setting there'll be down times (six weeks of nothing happening garrison duty) as well as inter-system travel (no-one wants to role-play each recharge station), but then it will also take a while to play out the more intense periods, I suspect.... At this stage I'm assuming we'll cover months if not years over the course of the game, potentially including the Clan Invasion - subject to interest, of course :)

Re: IC: Mechwarrior/Mercenaries Storytelling Game

I think I would actually find it rather interesting to watch recovered tech spread across the Sphere as it gets decoded from the Grey Helm memory core.  Then hear about the new and refitted designs that follow from the discoveries.

Re: IC: Mechwarrior/Mercenaries Storytelling Game

In reply to Finlos (msg # 9):

That's one of the reasons I'm picking this time period. Later on everything gets very uber-tech, battlesuits-everyone, massive multi-regimental scale conflict or far less interesting (to me) in terms of Jihad and Dark Ages. At the start of play I'm seeing none of the unit having anything lostech, for example (unless they can really justify it to me in their RTJ and be prepared for the curious, the thieving and the pesptering from the tech core)

Re: IC: Mechwarrior/Mercenaries Storytelling Game

Would all the Mechs be taken from the 3025 readout?

In reply to Silverfoxdmt73 (msg # 11):

Not necessarily, somewhere like sarna.net has pretty reasonable coverage, including variants. Also, characters not restricted to mechwarriors - any mercenary professional would be considered

Also, whilst you won't start with anything more fancy you may find yourself pitched against more modern mechs, have the chance for field upgrades and so on

Re: IC: Mechwarrior/Mercenaries Storytelling Game

Sounds like an interesting campaign.

I think I'd go for someone with a mech but I'll wait and see what everyone else thinks.

I do like the idea of taking time to focus on the down time aspects of merc life.

Grand. As Finlos noted, seeing the spread of stuff from the Helm core should be interesting

Give me a few more days to pull together the introductory material and then I will reply to this thread with the link and/or rMail folks

Re: IC: Mechwarrior/Mercenaries Storytelling Game

Not really what I want in a RPG, but look into MegaMek if you don't know about it.  It's a faithful version of tabletop Battle Tech using anything from the base rules to tons of advanced rules.

In reply to Jhaelan (msg # 18):

NP!  I'm one of the contributors (albeit a VERY minor one).

It also has as separate (or tied in) programs for unit management (Mek HQ) and unit design (Mek Lab).  Though if you are JUST using it for design, there are a few better (if not as up to date) programs.  Mek Lab isn't bad, just doesn't have the pizzazz that Heavy Metal or Solaris Mech Works has.

If you can't tell I'm a B-Tech fan.  If you have any questions don't be afraid to send me a message.

Re: IC: Mechwarrior/Mercenaries Storytelling Game

Slightly off topic, but did anyone place MechForce, an old Amiga game? Basically more or less a direct port of the tabletop game, hex based etc.

It certainly is.  The most active board for discussing it is the one on Catalyst's forums.

In reply to Silverfoxdmt73 (msg # 22):

A few times, LONG ago.  And that is where Mega Mek got it's start.
