[Doctor Who: Adventures In Time And Space] The Survivors

Deep inside the vault of Omega. The last day of the Last Great Time War.

He looks so old, so weary.

The War Doctor: "I've sent away as many as I could, without Rassilon noticing. It was easier than I thought it would be, being how engrossed he and the rest of the high council were with their own survival." You are locked, inside his old, creaky TARDIS. "I must thank the Marshall for her assistance. Despite having been twisted into something terrible by the Daleks, she has found her footing again - she is worthy now of being called the Traveller again, no matter how much she protests."

"So, then. I must now send you away. Those of our people I was able to save are scattered across time and space - heh, I never figured I would be making use of the Time Scoop like that. You are Time Lords. There was a time when that was a title one could wear proudly. You will be the last ones. The universe, despite what we have done to it, is still a beautiful place, worth defending. Uphold the laws of time and behold it's glory. As for my old TARDIS - please take good care of her - she will take good care of you. Now, farewell. My best wishes for your happiness. Find the survivors, and protect them."

Despite your protests or attempts to override the preprogrammed instructions, the Doctor's TARDIS groans to life as he uses his sonic to activate the console. The Time Rotor starts, and the time machine carries all of you away.

With your own eyes, you see Gallifrey burn, and then locked away, neither Dalek nor Time Lord ever a threat to time or the universe again.

The Survivors - A campaign for Doctor Who: Adventures in Time and Space. PCs are either Companions or Junior Time Lords, the only survivors of the Last Great Time War (created as per the DW:AITAS Limited Edition Rules or Time Traveller's companion, except with no instances or Experienced Time Lord).

Please comment. Is this campaign idea of interest?

Oh, wow, it's the Traveller! :D BHFH! ;)

Sure, I'm interested. Given the set-up, I had a few queries:

Is it general adventuring in time and space, or is there more of a set post–Time War campaign, like find/restore Gallifrey?

Are companions intended to be Time War survivors too? Or do they join the Time Lords later, and can be any kind of character?

Is that you, Smoke?

Companions can be from anywhere a normal Doctor Who companion can come from. A specific option is playing non-Time Lord Gallifreyans.

The idea is that the Doctor got as many Gallifreyans off of Gallifrey before the activation of the Moment and the Time Lock as he and the Marshall could have. Under what circumstances will need to be discovered.

Whether or not the game takes place in the same continuity as Always Time To Travel I will leave up in the air, depending on how Gary feels about it. I'm tempted to have the relationship between The Survivors and ATTT be the same as that of ATTT and current TV Doctor Who ;)

I will be making strong use of the Time Agency, the Torchwood Conservancy and some elements from Travcanon (such as the Krayloss empire). Watch this space.

This could be a very interesting game. Lots of potential for stories.

My one concern is that unless you're careful, the game could get stalled due to option lock. In other words, there are so many ways to go that the PCs are unable to make an informed decision.

I'm a huge fan of the original Dr Who show and a fan of the new Dr Who. I've run Dr Who games using the old FASA system, Timelords, and Cubicle7's Dr Who game.

Re: [Doctor Who: Adventures In Time And Space] The Survivors

Yep.

Party size and make-up could be an issue. If there's a Gallifreyan-heavy party (as you mentioned at ATTT), then multiple Time Lord PCs could get a bit samey or overlap a lot: same powers, similar outlooks, all with sonic screwdrivers. They'd need to be clearly differentiated in personality and traits, probably making the TTC sourcebook essential.

Similarly, three Time Lords and one ordinary human could make the human feel a bit limited. Unless the non-Timey is a veteran space adventurer themselves, in which case they may have three young Time Lords as companions. Which would be an interesting flip on the Who mold. :)

But that's basically the Jedi problem in Star Wars games: everyone wants to be a kick-ass Jedi, but not everyone can play one.

For those playing both games, it would be fun to suggest a shared universe. However, I wouldn't want other PCs to feel left out or missing something. Same with the "Travcanon": I'm never quite sure what happened in-game previously, or what is just the Traveller's background. The effect is like entering a long-running tv show (well, literally!). It's great flavour, but it would all need to be introduced fresh.

Anyway, that's just me wibbling about balance. It's probably all already obvious.

Re: [Doctor Who: Adventures In Time And Space] The Survivors

I agree with the above there. If you end up with say a party of 6; and everyone's a timelord? Yuck. I wouldn't have everyone a timelord, and I'd make sure the non-timelords have a way of being 'special' as well. It's the problem with licensed games in general I find - in Doctor Who it's timelords, Star Wars Jedi. Many other officially licensed games have something similar.

Re: [Doctor Who: Adventures In Time And Space] The Survivors

The idea is that everyone or nearly everyone is a *junior* time lord (in DW:AITAS terms, no one is allowed to take the Experienced Time Lord trait). These are all newly graduated Time Lords who escape the Time War *just in time*, and have only their TARDIS between them.

The one great difference is that there will not a "leader" timelord, instead you will be young Timelords dealing with the emotional and physical wreckage of the Last Great Time War, while defending the Time Vortex from and Earth from the various threats that would consume it.

Re: [Doctor Who: Adventures In Time And Space] The Survivors

I'm kind of interested... I'm a complete newb when it comes to the Dr.Who rpg, but I've seen all the new Who and selected episodes of the old Who, I grew up with McCoy as my Doctor (The Seventh) as a kid, though I've seen many a repeat of the Third and Fourth and I've seen the TV movie with the 8th Doctor too.

Just wondering if this would be a good game to jump in for someone that knows the background but is new to the system.

Seconded.  I don't know the system either.  I've seen everything from the 8th doctor on, plus Torchwood.

Re: [Doctor Who: Adventures In Time And Space] The Survivors

I was always under the impression that the Sonic Screwdriver was unique to the Doctor. Could be wrong on that, of course, given I've only seen the new series.

Also mostly new to the system, but I'm interested. Party balance doesn't really bother me. I tend to play characters that I believe to be less powerful anyway, just due to not being good at optimization (and generally thinking that story and roleplaying is more fun than optimization anyway). Besides, there are so many options that AREN'T Time Lords... I can already think of four.

I've played once before (not here, as I'm new to the site), where my character's most useful abilities were Screamer and Run For Your Life, and it was great fun. Obviously not a Time Lord. Unfortunately, that game died.

I'd be interested.  Haven't played the system before, but I've seen it and it doesn't look bad (well, technically I LARPed the system once, but the system didn't come into play often).

Re: [Doctor Who: Adventures In Time And Space] The Survivors

the screwdriver was unique to the doctor however most Gallifreyans used sonic technology so it is not a stretch that other time lords had different types. and I have an idea for a...different kind of timelord

Re: [Doctor Who: Adventures In Time And Space] The Survivors

I'm busy setting up the game as we speak. Details will be forthcoming by tonight.

This game will be related, but not attached, to GaryFury's PBP Always Time To Travel, it can be considered an AU of that setting after a certain breakpoint. Watch for details! I will post here a link to the post in the recruitment forum.
