Re: Another "lifepath" style game

2, 3 and 4 would all appeal, though my preference would not be for the Marvel or DC universes.

Re: Another "lifepath" style game

I would enjoy playing this type of game under any of those genres though I think 3 and 4 are the most interesting for the style of game it is. To avoid taking so many players in future attempts, try setting an application deadline and keep a firm number of players in mind. When the deadline hits, add the player's whose RTJ most speak to you or you think would fit best for the genre and game style up to that firm number.

Yes, last time I just took everyone. Next time it'll be a few days to submit, then I'll take the best 5 or so, judged entirely on writing sample. Hopefully I can get a group of players with similar styles.

Re: Another "lifepath" style game

How about a crossover, such as 2&4, 3&4, or 2&3&4?  :)

Re: Another "lifepath" style game

I'd be interested in 1, 2 or 3, not so much in using an existing setting since I'm honestly that familiar with those (and would prefer a blank slate to work with in this case).

Added 6: Near future, players will be the first off-world colonists.

1, a blend of 2 and 3, or 4 sound like they could be quite fun.

Re: Another "lifepath" style game

I have to say this sounds interesting. 1 & 3 look most interesting to me.

Sorry if I'm being slow but with the game mechanics being in the background would this have the feel of freeform or would it be perhaps more like diceless where players have a relative idea of character limits?

Re: Another "lifepath" style game

I would still happily play this style of game in any of those genre settings. I'd like to amend my preference though. 3 and 6 are the most appealing to me. I would suggest that 3 not be solely masked vigilante, though. I'd allow powers but just make them limited in scope. Instead of being strong enough to lift cars perhaps someone is strong enough to lift furniture unaided without strain. As an example....

Lift furniture unaided! Sounds super powered to me! ;)

Re: Another "lifepath" style game

I'm a player in the other game and I think it's a pretty awesome way to approach things. I'd love to play in another one in a new setting but I'm not sure if you would welcome players already familiar with the idea and all its....let's call it fun, twists.

You'd state your character's intentions and effort without implying the results (or other characters' reactions) and the GM would let you know how it works out.

Re: Another "lifepath" style game

Like Iammara, I play in Tortuga's current game and, if permitted, would be interested in others of that type.

However, I am the voice in the wilderness who would prefer game-setting #5.  I know I'm the first to so indicate, but I thought I'd put it out there in case there's a run of interest in that setting. :)

Yeah, you guys are absolutely permitted to play in other games I run. The roleplaying has been phenomenal.

Re: Another "lifepath" style game

I was listening to a podcast where the hosts talked about the perfect way to experience a film. Not knowing anything about it, not knowing what actors were playing what parts, so on and so forth, so that the process of becoming immersed into the movie was part of the journey. Figuring out what genre it was, figuring out the possible ways the plot could go, so on and so forth.

If you're starting the game with characters as children, and the system itself is a mystery, why not keep the actual genre or scenario a mystery, at least until it reveals itself?

Hi there! *waves*

Actually, I too prefer 5, but the other settings look doable as well.

I'll have to disagree with Airellian. Although the idea sounds fun, I personally found that at least having a clear idea of the setting itself informed my choices a lot. Since so many things are out of your control already when you play, having one thing as a stable factor really helps me.

Oh, I don't think it will be fun, I was just asking more out of curiosity. I mean, if the player knows what the end goal is, wouldn't some avenues or paths be cut off? Say, the player knows that the game won't take place in the wilderness a whole lot, so they don't feel the need to go camping and raise their knowledge in survival and such.

Though, perhaps I am wrong. :)

Re: Another "lifepath" style game

The "goal" will be presented in very general terms. Not much more concrete than in the summaries above. The setting info will be expanded as your character's understanding of the world grows.

It's intended to be very immersive.

Re: Another "lifepath" style game

I think that to both really simulate the world of the genre and to allow more real choice, the superhero games would have to offer the possibility of choosing a life as a villain or morally ambiguous type. This could also lead to PC versus PC clashes. It would really interest me if I could play in the genre if set in an original universe.

Again, with the conspiracy sort of game, it would allow more choice and more interesting choices to allow players to join in the conspiracy, too, if they decided to do it or considered that the best option.

Re: Another "lifepath" style game

Ehhhh... I'm disinclined to run a game that's actually a lot of individual games. I don't mind players having their unique storylines and sub-plots, but balancing characters who want to run off in very different directions is a lot of work.

I could absolutely see letting the players as a group decide upon a direction in-play, and I don't mind PvP conflict or betrayals and secret agendas, but I'd prefer to focus on one core story.

Re: Another "lifepath" style game

I agree. Morally ambiguous could be fine but someone actually going villain if others go hero would split the game too much. I agree with Tortuga that all the players should be on the same path, even if some of them occasionally take a little detour.

Another player from the current game chiming in (it's been awesome so far!). Would opt for 1 or 6 if you'll take repeat players

Re: Another "lifepath" style game

Everyone else coming forward I may as well also. I am also one of the players in the other game. If the fantasy game serves as any example than the new game should be some of the best RPing on RPOL. Awesome game! There are very very few games that get you as invested in your characters as this.

Re: Another "lifepath" style game

Going with vigilantes, as that seems most powerful. There may be minor powers available, but only if your character happens to run across them. Most of you won't.

I'll take 5 players. Recruitment will be open for a few days. It's not first-come first-serve.
