Modern Fantasy

Would there be any interest in a modern fantasy game?

As in all the races of a fantasy genre in a modern setting with.

starts off in a 0 magic world and then through some stuff magic is suddenly and violently shoved back into the world and catastrophic consequences.

"start off in a 0 magic world", meaning that the fantasy-genre races weren't there until after whatever Event brought magic back into the world, I take it? Okay. Are the fantasy-race people immigrants from whichever Other Realm? Or do normal humans find themselves transforming into elves/halflings/etc?

Re: Modern Fantasy

So, Shadowrun, or something else?  Or a Banestorm event?

Re: Modern Fantasy

There is always D20 modern, with Urban Arcana added when the magic hits.

Then again, GURPS can do pretty much anything cross genre.

In reply to Cubist (msg # 2):

No the game would start with a list of approved races. You still would need to put all racials but any that are magical or supernatural would be 'Locked'. Then through the story an event would unlock all magic in the world all at once. basicly in this world's history a massive event locks all magic away. For 500,000 years the world continued on with out magic and it survived and evolved with no magic. So Elves, Dwarves, orc, etc had to learn to live and survive with out magic. Through times with this has all been forgotten. And because of this this allows for the event for it to come back in. This then basicly causes the main problem. I will give a slight hint.

The Nightmare Sorcerer is the reason magic has been locked away.

As for the other systems I only own gurps. So Other systems i have never used.

So in other words, no magic anytime in all of recorded history. All the myths and legends were BS?

Re: Modern Fantasy

In reality we have only about 6-8 thousand years of recorded history, most of which is purely Egypt.

Then we have evidence of only about 12-16 thousand years of civilization.

So 500000 seems a bit excessive.

(Lets not forget about the religious folks who believe the world was created 6000 years ago)

Not necessarily. In this scenario, some or all of the world's myths & legends could have originally been eyewitness reports of magic-related critters/events/etc. Of course, after these reports passed through a few thousand generations of people telling people telling people, it's not at all clear how much of the original factual content would have been lost somewhere along the way, or distorted beyond recognition…

In reply to Cubist (msg # 8):

You realize that 500000 year's is a bit for legends etc to survive? Humanity as a species is only half that age. The Americas were only colonized 10000 years ago by the Mongols during the last ice age. The legends we have now don't really go back much more than 5000 years.

You might prefer a more conservative timeline. 2000 to 3000 years, maybe?

1. this is not taking place on earth.
2. 500,000 years is the time because of how the story works.
3. Cant compare earth history to a fantasy made up place.
4. You do not have to like what I am writing this is just an interest thread.

Re: Modern Fantasy

In reply to tmagann (msg # 11):

Oh no not upset at all! Text and email has no way to show intent or tone. Sorry if I sounded upset.

The 500,000 years is meant to account for an age of lost technology and culture. In the story there will be things that the group comes across that No one knows anything about. Almost like a rediscovery of things. The event that will accour is goin to basicly set the world back to befor a Stone Age. The races will have lived and grown with magic and then suddenly and violently it is removed. Races that are pure magic like fae and infused races just simply disappear. While nations and governments crumble and disappear almost over night and those that survive now have to from scratch. Vast empires are now gone leave pockets of slaves to fend for them selves. Magical colleges that were holding back say tidal waves or volcanoes now are gone an the waves and natural events are free to do what they please.

So it takes 500,000 to get where the world is in the story, which is in vast amounts of technology and scientific advancement.

What this will lead to is an expedition to a deep ocean area where an old structure is revealed and no one has seen it before or knows what it is. Then as the group progress through the building he worlds history that was long forgotten is revealed and basicly crap goes down.

Could be interesting. The wheel of ages has Turned a few times since Magic was sealed eh?

Was it... guilty gear??? that was built on a premise where magic suddenly because as available as cheese?

Then again Golden Sun games might be a better comparison?
