Dragon AGE in the Weird Wild West

My Idea: 1 part Dragon AGE RPG system + 1 part American Wild West Setting + 1 part Magic, Monsters, Necromancers, etc. Throw in the highest power blender available and hit puree.

Now to Elaborate. I've had a real hankerin' to run a wild west game. But not plain ole cowboys and indians. That's boring and been done 4,861 different ways. Throw in monsters, some necromancy, maybe even a little blood magic... now that's a setting I can get into!

Maybe the players are aboard a train headed for a new life in Dustwater Gulch, New Mexico when the US Marshals rush through their car. The train, and it's $20,000 transfer of gold, has been robbed! But the only evidence of the robbery is a 10' hole burnt through the secure car, the entire safe missing and a now undead US Marshal covering the thieving bandit's escape.

Or maybe the players make it to the town of Dustwater Gulch without a hitch only to find on the day of their arrival a new stranger came into town. Normally strangers are no big deal, but this one dresses like a gunslinger but carries a strange charm of gold and eagle feathers and carries a pair of Colt Peacekeepers with strange glowing runes. And the creepy old homestead out near Pine's Pass, the one everyone said was haunted. Well it burned to the ground with the strangest symbol carved in the dirt...

Have you played a Deadlands game?  It sounds like it would be right up your alley. =)

Re: Dragon AGE in the Weird Wild West

Deadlands is interesting, but it has a lot of setting specific stuff that isn't necessarily easy to manipulate.  I ended up going with GURPS for the Weird West, myself (and not using much out of the GURPS Deadlands book).

I've not messed with the Dragon Age RPG before.  It any good?  As long as the system didn't annoy me, I'd be game for giving it a try.

How are you going to account for firearms using the Dragon Age system?

No I haven't. But I've read up on it a bit and it certainly looks interesting. Although, I'm loathe to attempt to learn a new game system.

I'm a fan of the Dragon AGE system, but not of the Dragon AGE setting. I find the setting of the videogames kind of dull and uninteresting.

I have however run an urban fantasy Dragon AGE hack that went very well. The group and I really enjoyed the Stunt mechanic.

Actually most of that work has already been done. I may need to tweak things a bit, but we'll be treating them pretty much the same as all other weapons.

How do you plan to handle Backgrounds?

Re: Dragon AGE in the Weird Wild West

I don't know dragon age, but the setting sounds very good.  I get what you are saying about Deadlands, or any specific setting being hard to manipulate.  I'll see if I can skim through a Dragon Age book soon, but otherwise sounds like a good place to start.

I have a few backgrounds. Most of them borrowed and modified from various sources. I think I'll write them up and put them in a google document so that I can share them.

Also, if anyone has any ideas for backgrounds and the like I'm always happy to listen.

Dragon Age is actually a pretty simple system. I had three players who'd never played Dragon Age before and easily walked them through playing the game is a very short time. I'm much more of a "we'll learn on the go" type of GM so if you don't know certain rules it's not a big deal. I'm always happy to stop and walk through something.

Re: Dragon AGE in the Weird Wild West

This sounds like a fairly interesting premise and I'm curious to see how you've modified the Dragon AGE system to incorporate this.

I would think not... but if you have any ideas I'm all ears.

Unfortunately I'm having a problem with my laptop (my only computer) at the moment and there won't be any headway made on this project until I can get that sorted. However I am happy to continue to discuss/plot/scheme until my computer problems are resolved. (:

Re: Dragon AGE in the Weird Wild West

I'd be interested in playing. I don't know the system, so where do I need to begin my reading?
