IC: Star Wars Episode IV - The Nerd-Version

Hello everyone!

This is just an idea, Ive been kicking around in my head for some time now. I got no clue, if it makes any sense or if its even remotely playable, but I just thought, Id check here for interest and maybe ideas.

In this game, you would play average nerdy dudes, who happen to be huge Star Wars fans. (maybe even play yourselves, if you like).
Episode VII is about to come out in few days and youve decided to do an Original-Trilogy-Marathon, starting with Episode IV.

Youve got your Pizza ordered, your coke cooled and maybe even your joints rolled and then - by some unknown means - it happens.

ZAP! A white light flashes from your TV, youre all blinded and when you can see again, you realize, that one of you is standing in some kind of bar, while the rest of you is sitting somewhere in the same place.

Music is playing, its kinda hot in here and some dude just pokes the one leaning at the bar, and soon after his buddy tells you: "He doesnt like you."

Youre in Mos Eisley. And even worse... or cool.. or whatever... You seem to be Luke Skywalker. And Han Solo. And Chewbacca, Obi Wan or whoever you (as a player) have chosen to be.

You might love the idea of being in that movie, but getting back home again, is something you all wanna do sooner or later. So the only way, to get back home, is to see, that this movie gets to its end.

Everyone in the movie sees you as Han Solo and Chewie, but when you look at yourselves, you just look like you. Wearing costumes.

I think it can be kinda funny, having a group of movie-geeks being in their favourite movie and having to see, that all the heroics and other things get done more or less accurate...

I probably wouldnt use much rules for this. Maybe freeform it.

Does that whole idea make any sense to anyone but my humble self?

It makes perfect sense!

An argument could be made for running the game using SW Saga edition (or if enough supplements have been released the new Edge of the Empire rpg). Rules or no, you shouldn't have too much trouble locating players to enjoy a good comedy romp through a beloved franchise. I can picture now the sheer chaos and joy of screwing up the story and having to stress-fully toil to put things back right so you can go home.

Much as I dislike freeform for myself, I'd caution you against using any of the Star Wars rulesets out there. Whilst there are arguments about how well each adheres to the movie (Jedi not powerful enough for example); what it will inevitably do is detract from the 'we want to get home' feeling. The only exception I can see where it might make sense why you are as good as those games would have you be, is if you were sitting down for a game of whatever it was when you were transported.

Oh, and I think, Id have some trouble to fit a nerdy movie-fan into any RPG-Class.
They might look like Han Solo, but they still are, whatever they are. Clerks in a video-store or something like that.

My friend this sounds so awesome. You know if you do this you got a few fans in my House right. Seriously this sounds like it would be a lot of fun.

Re: IC: Star Wars Episode IV - The Nerd-Version

Glad to hear this.

How many players do you think would be good? Im thinking about 5-10 maybe.

And I was thinking about making Darth Vader playable, but I guess that would be a pretty lonely role. Would be fun, if this was a movie though.

Re: IC: Star Wars Episode IV - The Nerd-Version

I wouldn't make Darth Vader playable.

The big thing freeform gaming has; is there's no sense of balance you need to worry about for party sizes either too big or too small. I'd tend to lean towards a larger group though; just because so much of it is based on the interactions between the players more than anything else.

This sounds an awesome idea. Freeform is probably best, or maybe some very simple mechanics.

If I have a suggestion: make the movie characters be assigned randomly to players, rather than their choice. For one thing it would be amusing if a gung-ho type is stuck as C-3PO or Princess Leia is played by a guy while his girlfriend ends up as Han Solo. For another it would give a strong incentive to get back home (you might be a giant Star Wars but if you are stuck being a character you don't like...)

RossN:

No it wouldn't.

I nearly laughed myself silly thinking about what it would be like if a boyfriend of mine became Princess Leia and I became Han Solo.

I would never go home.

Re: IC: Star Wars Episode IV - The Nerd-Version

Letting the players just make their nerdy characters and then assigning them their star wars role randomly is a greta idea... Ill definitely use that...

Guess as a GM, I need to rely heavily on the script, taking whole exerpts of it, to describe whats going on...

Re: IC: Star Wars Episode IV - The Nerd-Version

I'd be totally down for this.

Personally, I don't like freeform, so I'd sugges one of two types of systems for this:

1) Rules-lite (FATE, the Window, etc) where the nerds have some basic traits that determine how well they do at pulling off their roles.  No effort is made to simulate the SW characters, at all, and some crazy things can happen to keep the story going.

2) Metagame rules-heavy.  Pick any of the SW systems, rules and all, and use it to exactly simulate the SW characters within that system.  If it has flaws (like Jedi being too weak), that makes it even better... because the nerds are playing the characters like they are in an RPG.  They can see their own character sheets and have to abide by their roles, no matter their normal abilities.  This can lead to a lot of hilarity as the burly fat guy that used to be a sharpshooter ends up unable to hit the broad side of a barn or the kid with no ability can suddely sharpshoot.  Plus, time goes weird in combat and the PCs have to stand around waiting for initiative, having table talk, etc. as they are paralyzed until their turn comes around.  Plus, there can be in-game in-character arguments about the system.

Re: IC: Star Wars Episode IV - The Nerd-Version

If you are going to randomly assign the character to the player I would grant each player one or two vetos. It can be fun to play something unexpected but if someone gets stuck with a character they hate or can't identify with they will likely lose interest. My advice, list all the possible characters and let every player eliminate one of them from their random assignment possibilities.

Not sure about the rules light thing, but Im gonna take a look at the window.

Giving players some sort of veto is a good idea.

Re: IC: Star Wars Episode IV - The Nerd-Version

So... The game is up. We have 7 player slots. Ben Kenobi, Luke, Chewie, C3PO, Han, R2D2 and Leia (although she comes a bit later)
