Vikings anyone?

No plot set just yet, and not sure if I'm going to let this have a fantasy tone, may be more historical/realistic type thing, but I'd like to see how much interest and what opinions are for this.

Re: Vikings anyone?

Come up with an interesting story/premise and I'd be interested. Definitely fine with it being more realistic vs fantasy as well. Historical a little less so but only because there's more things you have to adhere to and less freedom for the creation of the world the game plays out in.

Re: Vikings anyone?

Almattigr
In a city named Vartlebyr a secret was created the night that Konungr Arnlaugr (Eagle Vow) was born.  No one knew except for the now late Konungr Bjorg and his wife, the late Auda, and the midwife.  Konungr Arnlaugr, was the first born son, but there had been a second one born that night, the King ended up being the elder of identical twins.  The younger son named Alrekr (Ruler of All), who was secreted away the same night.  The King and Queen kept this secret even from Arnlaugr, and from Alrekr.

The elder twin was raised and educated in the ways of ruling in the longhouse of his family, while the younger was raised in a secluded location, often visited by Auda and even on occasion Bjorg.  Alrekr was back up, in case Arnlaugr was killed before ascending the title of Konungr, and so he was raised in a similar fashion as the elder twin.

Decades later, they were grown, still not knowing about the other.  Arnlaugr earned the title of Konungr shortly after the death of his parents, and for four years, he became known as a fair and just Konungr.

During those four years, Alrekr found out, by chance, who he really, truly was, and that he had an identical twin who held power in his hands.  Alrekr wished it for himself, so during those four years he was able to amass an army that rivaled that of his twin, even going so far as to stealing a few of his Drengrs, Thegns and Jarls.  Making it easier for him to pull of the coup shortly after Arnlaugr's four year anniversary as Konungr.

It took place in the dead of night, and Arnlaugr was captured, severely beaten to the point of being unrecognizable and was set on a ship to take him far away, exiled or killed, no one knows.

Then again, no one knows that Konungr Arnlaugr is now the younger twin Alrekr.  All that is known is that the views and ways of Konungr Arnlaugr have suddenly shifted and changed.

Man in the Iron Mask type I know.. but Corrupt King is overplayed, yes?  This way, we have a corrupt king, but we'll have the twist too :)

Re: Vikings anyone?

Nice set-up but if there is to be combat, of which one might assume with vikings and a coup, there should be some kind of system in place. Mainly because I can see the game devolving into someone building a 7' tall wall of muscle whos been a hundred battles and using that character to lord over the others because of their informed combat ability.

Re: Vikings anyone?

For PC against PC the pc's will choose what hits them and what doesn't, you choose how bad they get injured and what not. If it is pc against npc, then the gm's will either choose the npc's fate by rolling the dice, or just deciding like a pc which hit's hit them and how badly. This is done this way to ensure that if a pc doesn't want their character to die, they won't...simple as that.

So basically we ask that everyone does NOT make their character infallible and to make sure there is a weakness somewhere in there.

If we see that this isn't happening, then the GMs will step in to ensure it does.

Re: Vikings anyone?

Cero, just so you know as I am the co-GM in this one, I also have been playing all my games free form for years and mine have lasted for many years, not on this site though I do have two games nearing their first year mark, but that's neither here nor there. If we see someone getting too....powerful, we notify them and tell them to make corrections and no one is to....lord as you put it, over the others, we will remove them if they don't heed our warnings. So no, a system game is not always the way to go even with battles.
