I've been watching this show alot lately, catching up to the current season. I think I'd like to try something like this in something not a freeform style game. I don't have any rulebooks to any gametypes outside D&D 4th, so whatever is good with me

Have you looked into All Flesh Must Be Eaten? I read the rules a while back and they looked pretty simple and straightforward.

I'd be interested in playing if you got a game up and rolling.

All Flesh Must be Eaten is an excellent set of rules to run a Walking Dead game with, as it has a lot of zombie specific support with it already.

Savage Worlds would be a good one as well, a bit more rules lite then AFMbE.  I've played both systems and would recommend either one.  And.... I'd be interested in joining if you get a game going as well.

I'd suggest something rules lite like The Window, too.

Remember, zombie scenarios are disasters, not combat scenarios.  The zombies are a backdrop against which a much more social/survival story is set.
