Re: DnD 4e game with Far Realm incursion

I'm familiar with a fair amount of the lore aspects - 2e pantheon, the Bioware games based off of it, drow culture, etc.

I suck at using the actual system, though. Long as character creation and dice-rolling is mostly DM side, I can work within those lines while I try to figure it out.

Re: DnD 4e game with Far Realm incursion

Well 4e has a different pantheon, is a different setting to the Bioware games (which are usually set in the Forgotten Realms), and I can't say I will use much of the drow.. although now that I think about it, there could actually be a considerable journey through the Underdark. But in saying that, most things are still fairly similar - a bugbear is still a bugbear. There also aren't lots of epicly powerful NPCs wandering around that makes you wonder why they aren't the ones dealing with X or Y instead of you as FR sometimes has a problem with.

4e has a simpler version of most classes, so making a straightforward character with minimal dice rolling is not that hard.

tl;dr that's fine The Somniac

Hmm if a subscription is not mandatory I'd be interested.

I can also help people with the character creation. I'm a pretty experienced 4e player with an Insider subscription, so cooking up characters for others is no big deal.

I've been wanting to try some character concepts for a while. I don't have a suscription, but I'm very fast at writing characters by hand and I can help people as well.

Re: DnD 4e game with Far Realm incursion

Alright, so looks like there's enough interest, so how about some Input? :)

For the home setting, would people prefer to be adventurers wandering the world or have a home base and not really go too far from it most of the time?

For the home base, it would be a small kingdom on the coast, a trading outpost which would help facilitate some of the stranger characters who might be around. But I wonder how detailed I should be in making it. I like to have clearly defined people and places so I can mention them without having to explain them to the players, and also so the players can use them in conversation as well. So in saying that, how much input would you, as players, want in world creation?

So after I 'procure' a city map, I would start with a list of businesses and people and put them all over the place. Looking at how the official books do it, there tends to be a small blurb, then a bit more information for those who know the place, and then some DM info about each one. The small blurbs I could do, which might spark some player interest in a particular place, and they write more, while I fill in the rest - or I could write the additional info for all myself but let players either overwrite it or just add to it.

So to sum up my rambling post, how much input would you want in world creation? If we go with a kingdom, that is.

Flexible, but mild preference for the former (wandering the world). Maybe we establish a home base of our own in Paragon, but wandering is more 4e, to me.

Honestly not too exciting for me, but if you want to run it that way, I would be fine with it.

I am comfortable with only having periodic input. I do plenty of shared world-building in other games. As long as my character can be heroic as 4e intends him to be, I'm happy.

Re: DnD 4e game with Far Realm incursion

If wandering is the preference of the majority here, then that's fine with me - saves me a lot of upfront time building a city. The Kingdom could just be the launching point, that maybe you're called back to a few times over the 30 levels.

Re: DnD 4e game with Far Realm incursion

I'm not as interested on world building as I am on character development and interaction. As long as there is a kingdom/town to return to at the end of the day and have a friendly NPC interaction I'm fine, social skills would go to waste otherwise. (Ok I do care about world building, though I'm more on the bottom-up worldbuilding than the "suggest some epic thing for the setting", mainly because 1) I think that is the DMs purview, and 2) If it doesn't relate to my character or the party or never comes up, it becomes mere colour).

Re: DnD 4e game with Far Realm incursion

Yeah I wasn't asking for epic things, more just a tavern you frequent or NPC rival for the city. But we can have that without having to design a whole Kingdom anyway.

I think I'm talking myself out of the detailed Kingdom idea pretty quickly here.

Re: DnD 4e game with Far Realm incursion

I'm fairly open to what type of adventuring we do(base or wandering), whether we create and/or give input on the world or not is cool with me.

I'm fine with any format. World building can be a lot of fun, but a lot of work, too.

I'm good for either type, but I prefer wandering. I don't really care that much about taking a hand in worldbuilding, either.

Re: DnD 4e game with Far Realm incursion

I would be interested in this campaign.  I've been trying to get into a 4e game for a while now, but they always seem to fill up so quickly.  I like the idea of the Far Realm Incursion building slowly to coincide with reaching Paragon tier.

As for the type of adventuring, I lean more towards a wandering style, as well, but have no problem with adventures centered around a base of operations, either.  I am also equally at ease with leaving the world-building in the hands of others or contributing as needed.

Re: DnD 4e game with Far Realm incursion

Looks like wandering is the preference,  so it is good I asked.

So that leaves the tone of the game. I'm thinking serious (and the game will be Adult) and possibly dark, but I doubt my ability to write Lovecraftian horror that the Far Realm is inspired by. Though saying that, I wouldn't want a party of brooding antiheroes.

In reply to Ezri (msg # 22):

How about brooding, anti-hero, lone wolves?

But seriously... serious and dark are pretty much a must for a good Far Realm campaign... and one or two brooding anti-heroes is okay, but I, personally, prefer to play a slightly more light-hearted character for that sort of tone because it can make the Lovecraftian horror all the more jarring.  A good mix of personalities / archetypes is more fun.

Just an update that this is still on my to do list, but don't have time or energy at the moment. I'm having enough trouble keeping on top of my other games as it is.

I don't know what are the Far Realms settings at all. Can someone give me a brief explanation ?

I may wish to join if the settings interests me. :)

Re: DnD 4e game with Far Realm incursion

Although I haven't played in it, descriptions online are that it's basically a very Lovecraftian dimension.  Full of maddening monsters that could drive adventurers insane.

Here's the wikipedia for it: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Far_Realm

Is this game started yet or will it? I'd love to play in a 4E game. I'm fairly experienced with 4E, and love the PoL setting.

Re: DnD 4e game with Far Realm incursion

With this many replies in the thread, it should be clear by now whether or not there is enough interest in this idea to warrant moving on to a game.

Please save all further discussion for that game, created by Ezri (should they decide to go ahead with it) and linked to in the post immediately following this one.

Thank you.
