Three Unusual Possibilities: Interest Check

I'm thinking of starting up another Roleplay, possibly a fast paced one. System, freeform, it wouldn't matter either way as long as I got somebody to help. I have three ideas I think could make a really fun game but I've never seen done here on RPOL at least. I'm here to gauge interest on them.

1.) A Defenseless Earth against a Giant Monster

During a series of giant monster attacks on a major American city you play as a member of the military, a reporter, a rescue worker, or just a civilian. You'll need to team up with the other players to escape the city, rescue others, and attempt to kill the giant monster once and for all.

I plan on playing the monster, or having a CO-GM do it and me playing either a narrator figure or the leading general organizing the creature's destruction. I don't want to play a monster vs. monster brawl at least not at first. Basically I want to get a survival game or a save the earth-style game out of the players.

2.) Mecha Guardian

A giant robot game where the players are a squadron of 5-7 officers assigned to patrol either a human colony or a section of Earth. They soon find themselves fighting against far tougher criminals than they bargained for, and find that the enemy have military grade weapons as well. With very little hope of back up they have to find a way to stop the crime waves and keep their limited supplies up to the task of saving this world.

I intend this game to be very over-the-top and lighthearted. While having it's serious moments I don't intend for it to ever be a tearjerker. The setting would have aliens, intergalactic travel, mechs with flight speed higher than any other vehicle and the ability to transform and combine. I will have rules of this universe but they will not be restricting. The games will focus on Mecha combat but will have other vehicle pilots as player characters, like a repair tank, or a supersonic refueling jet. I intend to play the Big Bad and make it a combination of a superhero and giant robot game.

3.) Starship Racing

Probably the most unique idea I've had for an RP. But one that may not work in practice. A game where you fly around in manned small Starships or Hovercars and join a racing circuit. The game will be about the professional circuit and the minor circuit with competitors of all ages, species, and affiliations. Once again, very lighthearted and I'll admit my idea for this is a little underdeveloped at the moment. But the game would involve racing and combat in the high-speed vehicles.

I don't know how it would work exactly. But it would all lead to a major game ending tournament to decide the annual champion, and the two players who succeeded would have to race around a large and dangerous solar system.

--------------------------------

Any interest in these, ideas of your own, or questions about how these would work? I'd be happy to answer them here.

Re: Three Unusual Possibilities: Interest Check

Hmmm. All sounds interesting but two are combat-heavy and the other is skill-heavy. IMHO Freeform wouldn't be advisable.

Alright, I'd need a CO-GM for a system and it couldn't be a system that made me use it's own setting. Do you have a recommendation?

Re: Three Unusual Possibilities: Interest Check

I might have to disagree. I'm finding that combat in pbp games really doesn't work because of the attachment to turn by turn actions. If things were handled a little more cinematically (say a roll or two to cover the entire combat), things would work out a lot better. But without that, a directed freeform is probably your best bet.

Also, I had some trouble finding a setting-less but dedicated sci-fi game. So that's kind of another point for freeform if you can't find a game to run it in.

As an aside, option 3 sound pretty interesting. I haven't seen any racing focused games.

There's always The Window...

I'm interested in all three settings, but about the racing setting, I have a question. Why run the final in a tournament fashion instead of a World Championship points format that keeps everyone flying until the bitter end?

Re: Three Unusual Possibilities: Interest Check

@ScooterinAB: I might do that, but my freeform games tend to fall on the disorganized side and I'm not used to choosing a winner this directly. I'd want it to be completely fair. Perhaps I could do it but I may need to dice-roll behind the scenes.

Yeah I haven't seen a lot of racing games either. I've had this idea for a while and I think it could be fun, but I'd have the most trouble finding out how to work with this.

@pikunnussija: I think I've heard of The Window. Is it a universal combat system?

The tournament setting would be so I could have a definitive winner at the end. I'd like for the players to be able to have at least one-on-one race if they want and while I could do a points system I think that might be less fun because you'd have to keep doing extra work so we can all keep track of it. Maybe I'd let the players decide though.

Re: Three Unusual Possibilities: Interest Check

The Window is a universal Game system - very simplified rules - free to download to.

Re: Three Unusual Possibilities: Interest Check

Yeah. The Window is a simple, universal system.

As for a championship versus tournament, I personally think a championship would be better for keeping players engaged. That, and the fact that only drag racing runs a tournament format.

Re: Three Unusual Possibilities: Interest Check

Perhaps, but a one-on-one race would probably be unranked then. I'd have to think about it.

Re: Three Unusual Possibilities: Interest Check

Regarding how to do a racing game, you could try any game that has defined rules for chases. Not quite the same, but it might give some ideas on how to handle it.

Re: Three Unusual Possibilities: Interest Check

Good point, I might need to add a few homebrew rules there too. Unless I decide to use The Window.

Re: Three Unusual Possibilities: Interest Check

Disaster Strikes would be an option for #1, depending on how you see the game progressing.  It's a free system, available at http://www.blackarmada.com/disaster-strikes/

It's intended for one-shot games, but the giant monster attack would be a suitable disaster.

Thanks, is that your favorite of the ideas? Do you have any opinion on the other ideas?

Re: Three Unusual Possibilities: Interest Check

Never been very interested in mecha or racing, so the giant monster scenario sounds most interesting to me.

Right now I am leaning towards the racing game. Are most posters here thinking that is a good option?

In light of new things happening in my life I don't think I'll have time to start another game. Sorry guys.

Re: Three Unusual Possibilities: Interest Check

Since the OP has decided that they don't have time to run their proposed game, I'm going to close this thread.
