Input/Advice: Star Wars/Transformers Crossover Game?

"Many millions of years ago, on the planet Cybertron, life existed. But not life as we know it today. Intelligent robots that could think and feel inhabited the cities." --Tranformers, "More than Meets the Eye, Part 1"

"A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away..." --Star Wars opening line

Would this work? Would you be interested in helping build a shared universe? I'd want to do it as a freeform, "West Marches" style of shared-universe gaming, as I don't think there's an existing rule set that would allow for parity between giant robots and blaster and lightsaber-wielding bags of flesh.

West Marches: http://arsludi.lamemage.com/in...iments-west-marches/

My thought is that Cybertron is discovered floating through space just on the edge of the Unknown Regions as it makes it slow journey towards Alpha Centauri. That means it won't be here forever, but long enough to tell a story.

I'm thinking it would take place 4,000 BBY, to give a wide berth to the bulk of canon activity. There were some interesting things going on at the time, as evidenced here:

http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/4000_BBY/Legends

I also think if people want to play Transformers or Decepticons, canon characters would be welcome, as it's easy to find visual representation, and if players see canon characters, they know who they're getting. :)

I'd love your thoughts and ideas, as long as they're positive. There's no need for you to post if you aren't interested or don't have anything productive to add to the discussion.

Hmm, do you have a list of ship types/sizes etc. from that SW era? I'd think you'd have to codify how big/what size ship a transformer could imitate as one of the baseline things right?

So only speeders? X-Wing size? YT-1300 sized? a 5 transformer combo-bot of a capital ship?

it could be interesting. Transformers use energy weapons... can a lightsaber deflect that much energy? What about the force power Absorb energy like Yoda used on Dooku's Force Lightning?

Many questions!

Set against the backdrop of the Old Sith War... there is a lot of battle happening. What are the transfomer's goals as they come across this galaxy and these battles, as they cruise through the Unknown Regions on Cybertron? Defense as the Sith try to harness the Transformers to their cause? Sith/Decepticon alliances? Autobot/Jedi? some interesting interplay's.

That's definitely one of the things to be discussed. I don't particularly care if there's a size restriction; it's all about what the players want to play. If you want to write a five-Autobot combiner who can turn into a capital ship, have at it; you'll come in very handy in the event of a large-scale conflict. But if someone wants to team up with a bounty hunter, a light or medium class freighter or the like would be a better choice.

All the plot questions below are exactly the kind of thing I'd want to be exploring. Part of the plot would be around which faction gets there first. If we opened the game with Decepticons and Sith attacking a planet on the fringe of the Unknown Region who calls for help, then the Jedi (and others who might have a reason to be there, or who might already be there for their own purposes) arrive, fight, discover Cybertron and the Autobots, and off we go.

Energy based weapons and Ion weapons of the SW universe (and the Force) put them in a better position to handle the giant robots than we would be I'd think.

yeah, sounds interesting. I've never really done "free-form" before as I've feared the completely subjective nature of the thing. But from a world building perspective it could be interesting.

FFG's Star Wars role-playing game may have already done most of the heavy lifting for you as there already exists rules for human-sized characters interacting with vehicles of various Silhouettes.

One change you may wish to consider would be to reduce the damage scale between human/vehicle interaction (read: damage) from x100 to x10.  That will still make vehicle fire lethal to humans but humans will stand a better chance of damaging Transformer PCs.

That said, the concept sounds interesting.

The settings don't have to wild of a power imbalance.  Both make use of better than physics ranged energy weapons and melee weapons and have at least some concept of defensive energy distribution systems that fail under pressure.

The system mechanics aren't even that hard, just add a walking speed to SW vehicle stats and your done.

If the game were to use the FFG ruleset, would Autobot/Decepticon be built using the same career path templates (excluding Force users)? For damage reduction, I could see altering the damage for SW vs. Transformers and Transformers vs. Transformers, but leaving SW vs. SW as written. Would that make sense?

It's a fun concept, and Unicron would make a great Death Star. :D But I think Spaceballs did this already. :D

How would you handle droids versus transformers? That is, there's a lot of overlap between them that might limit storytelling possibilities. For one, I imagine transformers would be treated as a new kind of droid for the most part, and probably as second-class citizens. Second, half the things transformers turn into normally are replaced by droids in the Star Wars setting, so turning one giant robot into a different kind of giant robot could be redundant (the same issue with Terrorcons, Insecticons, Dinobots, etc.).
